In Steenvoorde, historic mills, nature and the Saturday market offer different ways to experience the town. A walking route and attractions in the wider region add to the options. Those planning a stay can consider culture, nature and practical visiting details separately, rather than treating the sights as a fixed itinerary.
Mills and architectural history
The Noordmeulen, also known as the “Moulin du Nord,” is a wooden post mill. It is one of Steenvoorde’s two mills listed in the supplementary register of historic monuments. During its restoration from 1978 to 1983, the year 1576 was discovered on a beam. This is not a confirmed construction date: the mill’s date of construction remains uncertain.
The Moulin Drievenmeulen, also known as the “Moulin du Sud,” is a wooden post mill dating from 1776. In 1901, it was moved to the municipality of Steenvoorde and converted for milling. Its sails have a span of 24.50 metres; they were reinstalled on 18 June 1997 and have been turning ever since. The Moulin Drievenmeulen has been listed as a historic monument since 24 October 1977. It is important to distinguish the dates: 1576 was found on a beam at the Noordmeulen, while 1776 is the date assigned to the Drievenmeulen.
The Maison du Coq on Place Saint-Pierre is also part of the town’s historic architecture: the house dates from 1664 and is listed as a historic monument. A three-nave Gothic church was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries and stands 92 metres tall.
Nature area and regional languages
Aire Nature is a 3.5-hectare biodiversity area in the centre of Steenvoorde and is designated a Refuge LPO. Its wild fauna and flora include several bird species, among them warblers, leaf warblers, reed warblers, green woodpeckers and tits, as well as three species of newt. A pond and the Ey Becque and Rommel becque waterways run through the area.
In collaboration with the LPO, Aire Nature offers a permanent, free nature trail. Details about the trail may change. It complements the walking route as another nature activity, without assuming any connection between the two.
The Centre de Ressources Documentaires holds a wide range of resources on regional languages, including dictionaries, books, audio recordings and films. The centre is open to the public on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. As access arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the latest information if you are planning your visit around them.
Walking and cycling
La Ronde des Moulins is a 9.5-kilometre walking route. It starts at the car park at Steenvoorde town hall, on Place du docteur J.M. Ryckaewert. The stated distance helps you gauge the length of a walk; on its own, it says nothing about how long the walk will take. Check trail conditions and signage before setting out.
For cycling, the Points-nœuds network in the wider region around Steenvoorde offers 830 kilometres of cycleable routes from which you can plan your own itineraries. This is a regional reference point, not one limited to the town itself. Before setting out, check route conditions rather than treating the entire network length as a single route.
Steenvoorde is part of the Destination Coeur de Flandre tourism board; the nearest tourist office is in Cassel. If you plan to seek advice there, check the latest office information beforehand, as arrangements may change.
Saturday market and event dates
Since March 2025, the Saturday market has been held under the Halle Marchande on Rue de Poperinghe, on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Check the location before travelling. Stalls include fruit and vegetables, dairy products and cheese, waffles, meat, barbecue food and fish; individual vendors and the selection may vary.
At the summer carnival on the last weekend of April, six giant figures from Steenvoorde are presented. The programme may vary. If you are planning your stay around this event, check the dates and the programme for that year rather than treating the information given as a guarantee of what will feature in a particular edition.
