Montjoi combines its 13th-century bastide with the MONTJOI – Circuit du Lac walking route, which starts at the bastide and reaches Lake Montjoi–Saint-Maurin. This gives your stay two clear focal points: the historic village and views over the Séoune Valley on the one hand, and a walk with a named destination on the other. The church, gallery and puzzle trail add to the heritage experience.
The bastide and village
Montjoi sits on a ridge and a rocky spur above the Séoune Valley. Its streets include flower-filled lanes and half-timbered houses; these details give the village a distinctive character as well as a clear place in history. As a 13th-century bastide, Montjoi combines a clearly defined settlement type with its elevated setting. The viewpoint is on the chemin de ronde that runs around the village above the valley, bringing this landscape into view.
Views and trails
You can reach the viewpoint by following the village fortifications or taking the chemin des écoliers behind the gardens. It is freely accessible year-round. As trail conditions can change, it is best to check them before your trip. If your main aim is to enjoy views over the Séoune, the viewpoint is a clearly defined destination.
The Circuit du Lac offers a different walk: it starts at the bastide, passes through the village and follows the chemin de ronde to Lake Montjoi–Saint-Maurin. The Saint-Martin washhouse is another destination along the route. So, as well as the village, this walk focuses on the lake and another named site. Check the local signs and trail conditions before setting out.
Heritage in the village
The present-day Saint-Martin Church was built in the 19th century and has a remarkable altarpiece. The date of construction and the altarpiece offer different starting points for exploring the church. Montjoi also has an art gallery. As its opening arrangements may vary, check visit options in advance.
Another way to discover the heritage is the interactive puzzle trail using Baludik. Introduced in 2024, the experience uses a free app with geolocation, puzzles and heritage discoveries. If you plan to take part, check before your trip whether the app is currently available.
Montjoi is also on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. For travellers interested in this route, the village’s location adds a wider regional connection to its local sights. Together with the bastide, lanes, church and different trail destinations, this makes it possible to choose a stay focused on what appeals to you most.
