Assier offers two distinct perspectives: elaborately designed 16th-century buildings and a Causse landscape dotted with dolmens and tumuli. If you are looking for accommodation in Assier, you can plan your trip around whether you want to focus on the historic buildings or activities in the landscape.

The château and 16th-century architecture

At the Château d’Assier, you can explore the building and its garden at your own pace. Only the west residential wing of the château remains; it is adorned with richly sculpted friezes and emblematic features. The surviving wing gives the building a distinctive architectural form, and you can explore the garden and building together. Check the current visiting conditions before your visit.

The Église Saint-Pierre d’Assier also combines architectural history and sculptural design. Construction began in 1540 and was made possible by donations from Galiot de Genouillac. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. On the exterior, a sculpted frieze and the west portal pay tribute to Galiot de Genouillac with an extensive iconographic program. The floor plan and exterior design therefore offer two concrete points of reference for describing the church.

The Pigeonnier d’Assier was built in 1537 and is cylindrical. At 11 metres high and 9 metres in diameter, its height exceeds its diameter by 2 metres. It also has 2,300 nesting niches. The combination of a clear geometric form, measurable dimensions and the number of niches makes the building easy to visualise, even without further embellishment.

Garden activities and planning your visit

During school holidays, guided tours and workshops are offered at the château for children aged 6 to 12. Free participatory workshops are planned at the Jardin de Galiot, prepared in collaboration with the Juin Jardins association. Visiting conditions at the château and the seasonal cultural programme may change; check the latest conditions and dates before your trip.

Dolmens, the Causse and trails

East of the town centre, three dolmens and tumuli can be seen on the limestone Causse. The Dolmen du Bois des Bœufs has been classified as a historic monument since 1889. The megaliths and tumuli offer a different focus from the buildings in town: here, the archaeological landscape of the Causse takes centre stage.

The Parcellaire covers 260 hectares. It has accessible paths bordered by dry-stone walls that are currently unmarked. If you plan to explore these paths on foot, bear in mind that they are not signposted.

Cycling is another possible focus: the “Entre Causse et Limargue” cycling route also starts in Assier. Alongside the historic buildings, you can therefore choose between walking trails and a cycling route as distinct themes for planning your trip.
