The Castrum de Cazals above the village, marked walking trails and the Plan d’eau de la Cayre give the town several distinct highlights. Other attractions include historic churches, a museum of rural agricultural machinery and a Sunday morning market. This means you can explore Cazals for its heritage, walking routes or time by the water, depending on your interests. If you are looking for a hotel in Cazals, you can start by considering which of these themes you would most like to shape your stay.

By the water: the Plan d’eau de la Cayre

The Plan d’eau de la Cayre covers 2.7 hectares. All fishing techniques can be practised along its shady banks and gentle slopes. In July and August, the Plan d’eau also offers a safe bathing area. Fishing and swimming are among the different activities available at this waterside spot; swimming is limited to the specified summer months.

Walking and following historic trails

Cazals has numerous marked walking trails. One clearly measured route is the Circuit de l’église de Luziers: it is 9.7 km long and leads to the medieval centre of Cazals. This gives you both marked trails for exploring and a named circular route with a set destination.

The Castrum de Cazals is a former fortified settlement dating from the 12th century, above the village. Traces of the walls, former fortified entrances, a corner tower and the site of the castle chapel can still be seen at the Castrum. The site is classified as a “Monument historique”. Taken together, its date, visible fortifications and protected status reveal different aspects of the historic centre.

Cazals is also connected to a pilgrimage route: the village lies on a secondary route, the “cami roumieu”, used by pilgrims on the Way of St James who continue to Fumel via Rocamadour and its shrine. This route is one of the town’s historic connections, alongside its fortified settlement and marked walking trails.

Churches and the history of technology

The building history of Notre-Dame de Ginolhac spans several periods: the church was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century on the foundations of an older Romanesque building. The Chapelle de Perboyre offers a different, precisely dated historical connection. It was built between 1873 and 1875 in honour of Blessed Jean-Gabriel Perboyre. These two sites offer different points of interest for anyone interested in Cazals’s architectural history and religious heritage.

The Atelier-Musée des Vieilles Mécaniques focuses on rural agricultural machinery. It traces its development from 1930 to the present day. The collection includes agricultural tractors, steam engines and stationary engines from 1930 to 1970. These two time spans should be distinguished: the development on display extends to the present day, while the exhibits mentioned date from 1930 to 1970. Most of the museum’s machines have been restored and are in working order. The history of technology thus complements the architectural and local history with a different perspective on the development of rural life.

Sunday morning market

A market is held in Cazals on Sunday mornings, attracting producers, families and other interested visitors. It is another local highlight alongside the Castrum, churches, walking trails and the Plan d’eau. The town’s attractions therefore include historical and technical subjects as well as a market that brings together people from different groups.
