Madiran is considered the birthplace of the Madiran appellation. Wine traditions, sacred heritage and local history come together in a range of activities for visitors: tastings, a Romanesque church and two walking routes with different focuses. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between them: the Circuit de visite Madiran traces the village’s history; the Patrimoine et vignoble madiranais route has a stated distance and can be enjoyed through several activities.
Wine tastings and the grape harvest
The Maison des Vins is located in the village’s former priory, next to the Église Sainte-Marie and its crypt. It thus connects the area’s wine heritage with a specific historic site. Free wine tastings are available, with a selection that changes weekly. Winegrowers from Madiran also meet there regularly to taste wines and exchange ideas. Visitors can sample wines from different estates and cellars in the appellation. As tasting arrangements may change, check the latest details before your visit.
The “Vignes de la liberté” vineyard is behind the Maison des Vins and is open to the public. It was planted in 1989; since then, the grape harvest has taken place there every year together with children from the local school. You can also take part in the grape harvest in the Madiran wine-growing area. This is a seasonal activity, so check in advance that it is available.
Romanesque heritage and historic sites
The Église Sainte-Marie is an 11th-century Romanesque church, classified as a historic monument and part of a Benedictine monastery. The church is open to the public, and an information leaflet is available for visitors. Check local visiting arrangements before your trip.
The Château de Perron and the Halle de Madiran also offer their own historical highlights: the château in Madiran dates from the 17th century and has a chapel; the hall is a historic market hall built in 1679. Visits to the château estate are available by reservation and include the chapel and cellars, followed by a wine tasting. Check the reservation arrangements before your visit.
Local history and walking routes
The Circuit de visite Madiran traces around 2,000 years of village history, from the monks to the Black Prince. The Patrimoine et vignoble madiranais route is 18.1 kilometres long and is suitable for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. The two options address different planning needs: the Circuit places the village’s history in chronological context, while the route offers a stated distance and a choice of several activities.
Vineyards and landscape
If you would like to learn about Madiran beyond its tastings, you can also explore its vineyards: they lie on clay and gravel slopes and are influenced by breezes from the Pyrenees and warmed by the sun. These landscape features add to the story of the area’s wine traditions, which are evident in Madiran both in its tastings and in the annual grape harvest.
