A historic church building and a designated dry grassland area give Sariac-Magnoac two distinct points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Sariac-Magnoac, you can first consider whether church architecture and murals or a limestone-rich natural area with orchids better suits your travel interests.

Gothic architecture and a long building history

The Église Notre Dame de l’Assomption is a small Gothic church with a square choir, a nave with rib vaulting, and rib-vaulted side aisles. It also features sculpted corbels; above the entrance, a bas-relief depicts the Crucifixion. A rib vault is articulated by projecting stone ribs, while corbels are projecting architectural elements that add distinctive details. The church therefore offers both the form of its interior space and smaller decorative details to observe.

The church was first mentioned in the 14th century as a castle chapel and was completely rebuilt at the end of the Middle Ages. It was listed as a historic monument on 6 March 1989; the listing excludes the bell tower. The early mention, the later rebuilding and the listing belong to different periods in its history and should not be read as a single construction date.

The materials used also give the building a distinctive character: it is made of dressed limestone and sandstone, as well as pebbles from the Gers, which flows directly beside the church. Alongside the building’s form and features, the different types of stone are also worth noting. This information about the materials adds to the architectural features without reducing the church to its Gothic form alone.

Murals depicting scenes from the Passion and other imagery

The murals depict twelve scenes from the Passion of Christ. The vault sections feature four medallions bearing the attributes of the Evangelists, as well as four prophets and four Sibyls. The decorations thus combine scenes from the Passion with other religious imagery, which can be distinguished from the individual narrative scenes.

The murals were discovered around the year 2000 during restoration and uncovering work on the walls of the choir and nave. This date marks when they were discovered, not when they were painted. The vault paintings are considered particularly significant in the discovery of Gascon murals dating from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 16th century. For those interested in culture, this offers another historical perspective alongside the church’s early mention and its reconstruction.

Orchids in the Pelouses sèches des Paguères

The Pelouses sèches des Paguères à Sariac-Magnoac area is designated as a ZNIEFF type I site, covers 75 hectares and lies within one commune. The ground consists of limestone slabs crossed by marl seams. Several orchid species thrive here: the frog orchid (Coeglossum viride), Ophrys du Gers (Ophrys aegirtica) and the bug orchid (Orchis coriophora subsp. coriophora). The bug orchid is nationally protected.

The landscape offers a different focus from the church: here, the emphasis is on the soil and plant life rather than building history and imagery. If you plan to visit the area, check local access conditions and treat this sensitive habitat with care.
