Guchen offers a distinct focus on cultural history: churches, houses, and a historic walking tour provide insight into architectural styles and the village’s history. There is also a tour that can be taken on foot or on snowshoes, depending on snow conditions, and explores the development of Gascon life. For planning a stay, the village’s history and its season-dependent activities can therefore be considered separately.

Churches and Architectural Styles

The Église Saint-Brice Sainte-Catherine, including its wall paintings, was listed as a Monument historique by decree on 6 March 1989.

Another distinctive architectural style is found in the large neo-Romanesque Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste: it has a semicircular apse and a single-nave church with a ribbed vault. An apse is the rounded end of a church interior; a single nave means that the main body of the church consists of one central space without side aisles. The chapel was built at the initiative of Benoît Rolland and blessed on Sunday, 5 August 1906, by Vicar General Théas.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame du Bouchet is also neo-Romanesque, but was built from pebbles from the Neste. The two chapels can therefore be distinguished by different features: the apse and ribbed vault are the main features of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, while the building material is what distinguishes Notre-Dame du Bouchet.

Walking Tour of Guchen

The Pays d’art et d’histoire walking tour in Guchen presents the village’s history and heritage through six interpretive information panels. Maison du Procureur is stop 3, and Chapelle Notre-Dame du Bouchet is stop 6.

In the 16th century, Maison du Procureur belonged to a prominent family from Guchen. Its street-facing façade features a half-timbered upper story and a tall tower. A half-timbered upper story is characterized by a timber frame in the façade; here, it stands alongside the tall tower. The building thus combines a historical association with specific architectural features.

Landscape and Tour

Guchen is in the accession area of Parc national des Pyrénées and within the Pic du Midi de Bigorre International Dark Sky Reserve. The commune also lies at the foot of Pic d’Arbizon. These connections add a landscape context to the village’s history without identifying the commune with a single protected area.

The event “From Dusk to Dawn Between the Hourquette d’Ancizan and the Col d’Aspin” starts in the village of Guchen. Depending on snow conditions, it can be undertaken on foot or on snowshoes. It explores the development of Gascon life from the past to the present and ends with a traditional, convivial meal around a fire. If you are planning to attend, take snow conditions into account when choosing between walking and snowshoeing.

The two activities also differ in focus: the walking tour presents village history and heritage through six panels, while the event combines a snow-dependent tour with a presentation of Gascon life and a shared meal.
