La Cavalerie offers several ways to shape your stay: the rocky landscape of the Larzac, the history of a fortified village, megalithic remains and flight experiences in a range of formats. To plan your trip, you can first decide which aspect interests you most. That way, the different themes need not become a tightly packed itinerary.

Cliffs and village history

Rajal del Gorps is a protected natural area in La Cavalerie. Impressive limestone cliffs and rock formations typical of the Larzac define its character. When choosing a theme for your trip, there is a clear contrast: Rajal del Gorps focuses on cliffs and the natural landscape, while the village’s history centres on its fortifications and church.

According to the village’s history, La Cavalerie was founded by the Templars in the 12th century. The Hospitallers built the fortification walls in the 15th century. These milestones give the village’s history a chronological structure: its founding and the construction of the walls took place in different centuries. The church, too, preserves a link to the past. It was rebuilt in the 18th century and contains elements of the former Romanesque Templar chapel. Visitors interested in cultural heritage can consider the fortifications and church architecture as distinct examples of it.

Dolmens and cycling route

The Dolmen de la Fabière is classified as a historic monument and can be visited via a walking trail from La Cavalerie. A distinctive feature of the Dolmen de Jonquet is its massive stone slab, which weighs almost 20 tonnes. The two dolmens therefore offer different points of interest: at Fabière, the walking trail is part of the visit, while at Jonquet, the exceptional weight of the stone slab takes centre stage.

You can also explore the Templar and Hospitaller heritage as a connected theme by bicycle. The Pays Templier et Hospitalier cycling route links four Templar and Hospitaller sites between the Larzac and the valleys, including La Cavalerie’s fortification walls. This presents the local heritage not only as a single village landmark, but also as part of a themed route. Route conditions can change; check them before setting off.

Comparing flight experiences

At the airfield, the main difference between the offerings is their format. The Aéro-Club Millau-Larzac offers air sports and private flights in La Cavalerie, as well as pilot training, introductory flights and trial flights. Discovery flights take place with a pilot approved by the DGAC. Availability depends on the date, so arrange your flight in advance.

Accel’Air Parachutisme offers tandem skydives from Millau-Larzac airfield, between La Cavalerie and L’Hospitalet-du-Larzac. Check booking arrangements and operating dates before your trip. Les Ailes du Viaduc offers another perspective on the region with scenic flights by reservation, using three-axis ultralight aircraft and gyroplanes over the Grands Causses region. When comparing flight experiences, you can choose between training or an introductory flight, a tandem skydive and a scenic flight. First, check the date and availability of the format that interests you.

Find hotels to suit your trip

When looking for hotels in La Cavalerie, it helps to decide what brings you there: would you like to focus on the village’s history, fortifications and church; are you mainly interested in the natural setting of Rajal del Gorps; or are you planning a flight as a special highlight? If a flight experience is central to your stay, check its date and make a reservation before deciding how many nights to book. For a cycling trip, checking current route conditions should also be part of your plans.
