A bend in the Lot and the cliffs of the Causse du Quercy define Saujac. The village lies in the river bend at the foot of the cliffs. The landscape and local history offer two different ways to explore the area during a stay: the Saut de la Mounine offers views over the floodplain and the Causse, while the Croix des Belges tells a story of local remembrance. The circular hiking trail leads to the viewpoints at the Croix des Belges and the Saut de la Mounine, bringing both themes together on one walk.

Views from the Saut de la Mounine

The Saut de la Mounine is on the D127 in 12260 Saujac. From there, you can see the floodplain 150 metres below, as well as the rocky ledges of the Causse de Gréalou. The village of Montbrun and its castle are also visible from this viewpoint. The elevation figure puts the plain in relation to the viewpoint; the rocky ledges draw the eye towards the Causse, while Montbrun and its castle provide a specific local landmark.

A circular trail with two viewpoints

The “Circuit sur les hauteurs de la Vallée du Lot – Saujac” circular hiking trail starts in front of Saujac town hall. It is 9.7 kilometres long and takes about three hours. The route passes the viewpoints at the Croix des Belges and the Saut de la Mounine, allowing you to combine landscape views and a connection to local history on the same walk. The approximate duration provides a guide for planning your day. Check the route page for current trail-marking conditions before setting out.

The history of the Croix des Belges

After the war, a Belgian family settled in Saujac and donated the Croix des Belges in memory of the families who had helped them. The monument commemorates Belgian families who had to leave their homeland in May 1940 during the German occupation and were taken in at a farm in Toulonjac. The events belong to different periods: the forced departure and reception took place in the context of May 1940, while the family’s settlement and donation came after the war. The Croix thus links a later act of remembrance with the history of flight and refuge. Visitors interested in local history will find here not only a stop on the circular trail, but also a specific historical connection.

More sights and activities

The village’s sights also include its old washhouses. Fishing is also possible in the Saujac area. These add another village attraction and a leisure activity to the viewpoints and the history of the Croix. The trail’s length and approximate duration help with planning; the washhouses offer a different local focus, while fishing is another activity available in the area. Saujac can therefore be explored in different ways: by walking to two viewpoints, focusing on the village sights, or enjoying fishing as an activity.
