The Rocher de Carlong towers above the village of Saurat. Its almost circular shape and diameter of around ten metres provide a striking landmark. At the same time, the municipality stretches from east to west between the Calamès and the Col de Port. This makes the village and the wider landscape distinct points of reference for planning a trip.

Landscape and Caves

The Cap de la Dosse reaches 1,948 m and borders the Pic de La Journalade at 1,941 m. There is a seven-metre difference between the two summit elevations. Together with the Rocher de Carlong, they create a varied landscape of prominent heights and a rock formation that towers above the village.

There is also a distinctive focus underground: the Grotte de Siech has 6,000 m of galleries and is popular with cavers. Another caving experience is the family underground excursion “Grotte de Saurat – Vertikarst.” It introduces visitors to caving and features stalactite and stalagmite formations, erosion patterns in gleaming marble, and bones of cave bears dating back around 30,000 years. The experience is listed for the 2026 season; check availability with the operator before making plans.

Compare Hikes by Time and Elevation Gain

The GRP Tour du massif des Trois Seigneurs long-distance trail passes through Saurat. Two loop trails offer specific points of comparison: “Du buis au chêne” is an easy hike covering 5.3 km, with an estimated walking time of about two hours and 250 metres of elevation gain. “Autour de Montorgueil” is also classified as easy; the route covers 4.9 km, with an estimated walking time of about an hour and a half and 304 metres of elevation gain.

The second loop is 0.4 km shorter and has an estimated walking time about half an hour shorter, but involves 54 metres more elevation gain. Comparing the time estimates therefore shows a shorter time frame but a greater ascent; both trails are described as easy. Walking times are approximate. Trail conditions and maintenance can change, so check conditions before setting off.

Building History, Art and Former Forges

The Church of Saint-Blaise in Prat Communal was built between 1866 and 1870. The municipality’s artistic heritage also includes a fresco created by Van Vanzelle in 1971. The church’s construction period and the fresco’s year of creation provide two distinct dates in the history of the area.

Another historic point of interest lies along the “De Saurat à Prat Communal” route: it passes the site of the former forges of Esquérannes. The name refers to a former forge site; the route thus adds a craft element to the area’s architectural and artistic history. Those looking to balance culture and outdoor activities in their travel plans will find a range of themes here, without them being combined into a single loop.

A Local Market with a Changing Menu

For the 2026 season, the Saurat crafts market features local producers and a lunch with a Portuguese menu connected to the region’s culinary traditions. The menu and programme may vary with each edition; take this into account when planning your visit.
