Mazères brings together two distinct themes: the birdlife of the Domaine des Oiseaux and the history of the bastide. In the historic centre, this history can be seen in both the town layout and individual buildings. You can therefore choose your own focus for your stay, between nature, architecture and local history.

Domaine des Oiseaux: Ponds, Birds and Walking Paths

The Domaine des Oiseaux covers 100 hectares, including 30 hectares of ponds. It is home to almost 250 bird species each year, including migratory birds and white storks. More than eight kilometres of walking paths wind through the pond landscape. Here, water, birdlife and paths come together to create a clear focus on nature.

If you are particularly interested in landscapes and birds, this offers a different focus from the architecture and history of the bastide. The walking paths also give the Domaine a distinct dimension for planning your visit: in addition to the ponds and bird species, you can take the stated length of the paths into account.

Bastide and Historic Buildings

The historic centre of Mazères retains a very regular grid layout that follows the winding course of the banks of the Hers. Half-timbered houses are also part of the bastide’s architecture. The town layout and these houses offer two different perspectives on the place: the overall structure of its streets and the construction of individual buildings.

Another striking building is the Halle de Mazères. It was built between 1845 and 1851 by architect Coma as a Neoclassical market hall. The entire hall is protected as a Monument historique; it was listed by decree on 27 October 2004. For those interested in architectural history, it offers a connection between its architectural classification and its later protected status.

Museums and Historical Insights

The Musée de l’Hôtel Ardouin is housed in a pastel merchant’s mansion built in 1580. The estate includes a garden designed in the spirit of the Renaissance. The building and garden offer another way to explore the history of architecture in Mazères. If you are planning a museum visit, please check current visiting arrangements in advance.

The Musée des barbares devotes its permanent exhibition to the history of excavations at the Bénazet site, about two kilometres from Mazères on the left bank of the Hers. The necropolises covered there include a Visigothic one dating to the 5th century and a Merovingian one dating from the 6th to the 8th century. The history of cloth-making is also part of the area’s past: Mazères became one of the five cloth-making centres in the Pays de Foix.

Weekly Market and Trip Planning

The weekly market takes place every Thursday morning at Place du Général de Gaulle, also known as Place de l’église. The market is also a place to sample local specialities. The date may be adjusted for special fairs or markets; if you are planning your stay around it, check the date in advance.

When looking for a hotel in Mazeres, you can first consider what matters most for your stay: birdlife and ponds, the bastide and its buildings, or the historical themes explored by the museums.
