Balaguères brings together distinctive village architecture and varied landscapes. In the hamlet of Balagué, stone barns and elevated bread ovens form part of the village’s cohesive appearance, alongside views of the high Pyrenees range and the surrounding hay meadows. When choosing where to stay, consider whether you are especially interested in architectural styles, natural landscapes or one of the routes described.

Balagué: Village Layout and Historic Traces

Balagué is a hamlet in the municipality of Balaguères, distinguished by its authentic and highly cohesive built environment. Notable features include stone barns and elevated bread ovens. The cohesive layout describes the overall impression of the village, while the barns and ovens bring this character to life through individual architectural features.

The views vary depending on where you are: from Balagué, you can see the high Pyrenees range and the surrounding hay meadows; at Tour Sainte Catherine, the view extends across the Balaguères valley to the high peaks of the Castillonnais. At the site of Tour Sainte Catherine, the tower, remains of the enclosure and the foundations of a former chapel belonging to Balagué’s old refuge castle have been preserved.

Dry Grasslands and Natural Landscapes

Balagué has dry grasslands with exposed limestone in places. Dry grasslands are also found in Balaguères; their flora is often very diverse and includes many orchids. The dry grasslands associated with Balaguères provide habitats for butterflies, birds and reptiles. The Natura 2000 site “Chars de Moulis et de Liqué, grotte d’Aubert, Soulane de Balaguères et de Sainte-Catherine, granges des vallées de Sour et d’Astien” includes the Soulane de Balaguères and Sainte-Catherine areas. This places specific areas of dry grassland alongside the broader landscape areas within the site.

Circular Hike and Winter Trail

The Tour de Sainte Catherine is a 4 km circular hike with 245 metres of elevation gain. There is a car park near the tower, and the starting point is in 09800 Balaguères. The distance and elevation gain help you gauge how to fit the route into your day.

The Sarrat de Balagué winter circular trail passes through pastures and hamlets with barns, including some with “pas d’oiseau”-style roofs. The routes offer different highlights: the Tour de Sainte Catherine focuses on its circular layout, distance and ascent, while the Sarrat route features pastures, hamlets and distinctive roof styles.

Alas and Beekeeping

Alas is also part of the municipality of Balaguères. In this small village, Milabeille has been keeping bees since 2008. This adds a specific local activity to the area’s architecture and natural landscapes. The local features are spread across different villages: the barns and bread ovens are characteristic of Balagué, while the beekeeping business is in Alas.
