A fortified structure dating from the 13th century, a history of milling on the Arize, and a marked 9.5-kilometre circular trail give La Bastide-De-Sérou a variety of themes for visitors. You can focus your stay on local history or include trails through the countryside.

Heritage and architectural history

The Tour du Loup is a fortified structure in La Bastide-De-Sérou. Its main construction phase dates from the 13th century; today, it is protected as a historic monument. A guided tour of the town includes commentary on its history, architecture and heritage. This offers a different perspective from looking at individual buildings: the focus is on their historical and architectural context.

The covered market hall also bears traces of several eras. It was rebuilt in 1830 and retains three stone grain measures that have been there since 1872. In Unjat, within the municipality of La Bastide-De-Sérou, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary has memorial plaques for those who died in the wars of 1914–1918, 1935–1945 and 1954–1962.

Mills on the Arize

The “coulant des moulins” is a mill section about two kilometres long within the municipality. In the 17th century, there were five mills along this stretch, powered by the waters of the Arize River.

Another technical detail can be found at the Molo Porto mill, also known as the “moulin de la porte” or “moulin du Château”. It lies beneath the Tor de la Faurie, at the foot of the walls of the former 13th-century bastide. The mill still houses its Kaplan-type electric turbine; its restoration is planned.

Circular trail, cycle route and getting there

The Tour du Gariné is a marked circular trail covering 9.5 kilometres. It starts at the car park by the post office in La Bastide-De-Sérou and uses the Voie Verte and country paths to explore the Massif de l’Arize.

The Voie Verte Saint-Girons–Foix, also known as the Véloroute V81, reaches La Bastide-De-Sérou in the station district. The town centre is about one kilometre away. The La Bastide-de-Sérou–Place bus stop is served by the Foix–Saint-Girons routes. Check the current timetable before travelling.
