A seasonal apple harvest, the church of Saint-Sernin and archaeological finds from several periods give Cazals-des-Baylès a range of themes to explore during a stay. There are also crafts in Barréjat and a signposted walking trail near the Terres de Barréjat accommodation. When planning your trip, you can distinguish the harvest, which is limited to a particular season, from the historical and craft-related points of interest.
Apple picking during the seasonal window
During the picking season, from the end of August to the beginning of November, visitors can pick traditional and heirloom apple varieties themselves at Domaine du Bedou. These include Gala, Golden, Chantecler, Fuji, Reine des Reinettes, Canada and Boskoop. If picking your own apples is a main reason for your trip, plan your stay around this window. The varieties listed make the harvest experience tangible, while it remains a seasonal part of what is on offer rather than the place’s only possible focus.
Saint-Sernin and the history of the cemetery
Cazals-des-Baylès was first mentioned in 943 under the name Montauriol. The current church of Saint-Sernin bears the year 1855 above its portal; this may indicate the year it was built. A statue accompanying the church depicts Saint Sernin, also known as Saint Saturnin. The former church of Saint-Sernin stood in the cemetery and had disappeared by 1902. Medieval sherds found in the cemetery date from the 13th and 14th centuries. The history of the name, the current church and the older cemetery finds provide different historical points of reference.
Archaeological traces in Coudoumines
Coudoumines is considered an ancient rural settlement. Ceramic sherds dating from the 1st to the 4th century were found in and around the cemetery. Numerous tegulae—flat, rectangular tiles with raised edges—provide evidence of a Gallo-Roman settlement. Also found was a fragment of the handle of a wine amphora from Tarraconensis, a Roman province in Spain. The Pascual 1 amphora type is dated to approximately 50 BC to AD 50. The dates offer a point of comparison: the amphora type dates to around the turn of the era, while the ceramic sherds mentioned span the following centuries.
Crafts and nature
Barréjat in Cazals-des-Baylès is surrounded by meadows, forests and hills. Stéphane, a potter for over 40 years who is now retired, has reopened his pottery workshop there. The pieces made there can be seen in the workshop or in the guest rooms. This means pottery is not just a product, but is also associated with a specific place to discover.
There is also a specific point of reference for a walking option: a signposted walking trail runs less than 500 metres from the Terres de Barréjat accommodation.
The main seasonal distinction concerns the apple harvest: picking your own apples is possible from the end of August to the beginning of November. Saint-Sernin and the finds in Coudoumines, by contrast, offer different historical points of interest. If the harvest is your deciding factor, plan your stay during the picking season; if you are primarily interested in local history, the church, cemetery and archaeological sites offer different themes to help you choose your stay.
