Bonac-Irazein combines scenic mountain destinations with traces of past work and transport history; local produce is also available at the market. This gives you a range of options when planning your trip: you can focus on the landscape, the industrial heritage or regional products. The destinations differ in character—from summit views and historic sites to a circular trail through a forest.
Mountain Landscape and Views
At 2,750 m, the Mail de Bulard is the highest peak in Bonac-Irazein. As a viewpoint, it offers views of well-known peaks in neighboring municipalities; at the same time, the massif has a rich history and is marked by mining relics. This means that the same mountain massif brings together three distinct but related themes: altitude, views and mining history. Another perspective can be enjoyed on the hike to the Tuc du Coucou, from where the panorama extends to the eastern side of the Mail de Bulard and Mont Valier. The views differ: from the Mail de Bulard, you look towards well-known peaks in neighboring municipalities, while from the Tuc du Coucou, the views are specifically of the eastern side of the Mail de Bulard and Mont Valier. The GR10E also passes through Bonac-Irazein.
Mining and Transport History
The Bocard d’Orle, a Belle Époque ore-processing plant, is located in Lascoux. Another piece of technical heritage is the restored station in Bonac-sur-Lez, with its platform. It is connected to the former electric tramway, which carried both goods and passengers. These sites offer different perspectives on local history: the Bocard d’Orle bears witness to ore processing, while the station relates to the former transport of goods and travelers. As an ore-processing plant, the Bocard represents a different kind of work from the tramway, which carried goods and people.
A Historic Circular Trail
The Sentier découverte Decauville presents the historical perspective in a different way. This circular trail, with its historic and nostalgic character, runs through a forest with tunnels and starts at the La Pucelle car park in the Orle valley in Bonac-Irazein. The difference from the GR10E is clear when choosing a route: the GR10E passes through the municipality, while the Sentier découverte Decauville is a circular trail with a named starting point. The forest and tunnels give this trail a different character from the viewpoints at the Mail de Bulard and on the hike to the Tuc du Coucou.
Local Produce and Getting There
The Bonac-Irazein market offers local products, including jams, beer, bread and other baked goods, as well as goat’s cheese. Regional products therefore have a place in your trip planning alongside the mountain landscape and technical heritage.
There is a specific bus connection to consider if you are planning a trip in a campervan: Bonac-Irazein’s campervan parking area is less than a ten-minute walk from the BONAC-IRAZEIN – Lavoir bus stop. The stop is served by the SENTEIN – SAINT GIRONS line. If you want to use this connection, check the line’s timetable before setting off.
