In Auzat, cultural history and mountain scenery sit side by side, each with its own highlights. The Maison des Patrimoines explores how people have shaped the mountain region; hikes in the Soulcem valley lead to high-altitude lakes and peaks along the border. There are also the Orris du Carla and the Château de Montréal-de-Sos in the hamlet of Olbier. You can explore Auzat through the themes that interest you most.

Cultural history in Auzat and Olbier

Le Barri – Maison des Patrimoines in Auzat is an interpretation center focused on how people have shaped the mountain region. Its exhibitions cover hydropower, mining, archaeological excavations, and the fauna and flora of the Vicdessos valley. Themed tours and educational workshops explore subjects including archaeology and regional fauna and flora. The focus is therefore not only on the landscape, but also on the history of how it has been used: hydropower and mining feature alongside nature and archaeological finds.

In the hamlet of Olbier, the Château de Montréal-de-Sos served as a barracks for the Counts of Foix from the 12th to the 15th century. This gives the site its own historical significance within Auzat’s cultural heritage. The château is open year-round, free of charge; the approach takes about 15 minutes along a stony path. An information board offers a view of the upper Vicdessos valley. Check locally before your visit to see whether there is an exceptional closure.

Orris du Carla: dry-stone construction and shepherding history

The Orris du Carla are a remarkably well-preserved group of dry-stone shepherds’ huts. Their construction makes this heritage tangible: these are not just historic names, but surviving huts. The first orris date back to the Bronze Age; they remained in use until the beginning of the 20th century. This gives the visit a long historical scope, from their early origins to the end of their use.

The orris are a few dozen meters from the Carla parking area, which lies beyond the Soulcem dam. The Circuit des Orris is a hiking trail that loops around former shepherds’ shelters. The trail also offers a dedicated hiking connection for anyone interested in the group of huts. The location of the Carla parking area helps you place the orris in the area beyond the dam.

Hiking destinations in the Soulcem valley

The Circuit des Orris reaches Étang de Roumazet at 2,163 meters and Étang de la Soucarrane at 2,292 meters. The trail also leads to a footbridge at the foot of the Labinas waterfalls. The elevations make it easy to compare the two lakes directly: Étang de la Soucarrane is 129 meters higher than Étang de Roumazet. The same trail therefore connects two named destinations at different elevations, as well as the waterfall viewpoint.

The Soulcem valley in Auzat is also a natural site offering panoramic views from the dam. Numerous hikes lead from the valley to peaks along the border and high-altitude lakes. The view from the dam and the hiking destinations at higher elevations offer different perspectives on this landscape: the first opens up a panorama, while the latter lead to specific destinations. Part of Auzat also extends into the Natura 2000 site “mont Ceint, mont Béas, tourbière de Bernadouze,” designated on May 4, 2007.

Adventure sports and climbing

The Via ferrata du Vicdessos offers an adventure-sports activity for all population groups amid the scenery of the Regional Natural Park. For climbers, the climbing areas of Auzat at the Le Far and Montcalm crags have 135 routes and 143 pitches. The route inventory may change, so check the current figures if they are important for your specific plans. Climbing areas and the via ferrata thus add other activity options to the cultural and hiking destinations, without turning them into a fixed itinerary.
