Two distinct travel interests take centre stage in Allières: remembrance at Saint-Roch Church and a hike that begins in the village. The war memorial ensemble offers a tangible point of cultural and historical interest; the “D’Allières à Escougnals” trail leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Séronais, which is suitable for observing birds of prey. This lets you choose your destination based on your interests in culture and nature.

Culture at Saint-Roch Church

The war memorial ensemble in Allières is located on the south interior wall of the nave of Saint-Roch Church. It includes a life-size statue of Joan of Arc, created by the Toulouse-born sculptor François-Dominique Monna. The combination of the figure and the named attribution to the artist gives the ensemble a specific cultural and historical context. A 2013 restoration report also mentions the painting “Présentation de Jésus au temple” and a copy made by Louise Astoud-Trolley of Lorenzo di Credi’s painting “La Vierge et l’Enfant entourés de saint Julien et saint Nicolas de Myre”; the original dates from 1494.

The memorial plaque commemorates the soldiers who died in the First World War of 1914–1918. It lists the names, first names and dates of death of ten soldiers. Together, the life-size figure and the named remembrance of individuals take centre stage.

Le Plantaurel and the surrounding landscape

The municipality of Allières lies within the “Le Plantaurel” ZNIEFF (Type 2). In the wider region, Le Plantaurel is a major karst landscape featuring rocky habitats and cliffs, dry grasslands, meadows, forests and ponds. The landscape ranges from striking rock formations to open meadows, woodland and bodies of water. Allières is also part of the study area of the Parc naturel régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises.

There are several stream sinks near the hamlet of Monteillas. Water flows above ground there at first, then continues its course underground. The term describes the transition from a visible watercourse to an underground one, adding a specific natural feature to the karst landscape.

Hiking from Allières

The “D’Allières à Escougnals” hiking trail begins in the village. The walk is listed as taking 1 hour and 50 minutes; it is rated very easy and can be done year-round. The hike therefore has a specific time estimate, difficulty rating and broad seasonal suitability. These details can help you plan the trail as a separate outing.

The viewpoint along the trail offers a view over the Séronais and is suitable for observing birds of prey. If you would like to allow time for this, you can plan a break in addition to the stated walking time. This makes it possible to distinguish the time needed for the route from the time spent observing nature; besides its duration, the viewpoint gives the hike a specific focus.
