Raon-Aux-Bois lies in the heart of the forest, away from heavily trafficked roads. Alongside this forest setting, church art, bridges and other elements of the local heritage shape the area. There is also the “Hêtre zen” trail and two mountain bike loops that differ in length and difficulty. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up cultural and historical attractions against different cycling routes.

Forest setting and watercourse

The small river La Niche is joined by the Champée, Prés Roussel and La Racine streams before flowing into the Moselle at Arches. The three tributaries give the watercourse specific names, while its confluence at Arches helps place its onward course. This adds a distinct geographical point of reference to Raon-Aux-Bois’ forest setting: the description of the commune and the course of the river sit side by side.

Saint-Amé Church: Art and furnishings

Saint-Amé Church houses an altarpiece dating from 1731. In 1964, it was listed as religious cultural heritage among the historic monuments. The two dates therefore refer to different aspects: 1731 is the date of the altarpiece, while 1964 marks its listing. The church’s furnishings also include fourteen stone Stations of the Cross and a baptismal font dating from 1867.

There is also a reliquary containing the remains of Saint Del. The altarpiece, baptismal font, Stations of the Cross and reliquary represent different forms of religious furnishings. Visitors interested in church art will find several clearly identifiable features here, rather than just one historic object. Comparing the altarpiece from 1731 with the baptismal font from 1867 adds two widely separated dates of creation to the art-historical perspective.

Bridges and local heritage

You can also find tangible traces of local history outside the church. The Pont du Fouxel was built on a rock in 1864. The Pont du Vitrier is in the forest near Les Trayes; its location is what connects it to the area. Eleven wayside crosses still stand in Raon-Aux-Bois as part of the local heritage. There are also around thirty fountains. Together, the bridges, wayside crosses and fountains represent different forms of built and small-scale heritage, broadening the picture beyond the church furnishings.

Saint Del is celebrated in Raon-Aux-Bois every year on the first Saturday in March. If you are planning a visit around this date, check the specific date for the relevant year: the first Saturday does not always fall on the same calendar date.

Hêtre zen: Designed activity areas

The “Hêtre zen” trail was inaugurated on May 31, 2025. The site included a redesigned picnic area with a stage and grandstands, as well as family-oriented play, awareness-raising and observation areas. These features combine a landscaped place to spend time with zones dedicated to different themes. The trail’s offering therefore differs from the cycling routes, where distance and difficulty are the main factors in choosing a route.

Comparing two mountain bike loops

Mountain bike loop No. 29, Le Bambois, is an 8.3-kilometre circuit in Raon-Aux-Bois. It is rated easy and marked blue by the FFC. The second loop, No. 28, Le Tour du Village, is 22.4 kilometres long, challenging and marked red by the FFC. The two routes therefore differ in both distance and stated difficulty: Le Bambois is the shorter, easier option, while Le Tour du Village is longer and more challenging. Check current route conditions before setting out.
