Rehaupal can be explored through two distinct themes: the landscape around Le Trou de l’Enfer and the cultural heritage of milling history and stained glass. The Barba shapes the description of the valley and gorge; a mountain bike circuit also starts at Église de Rehaupal. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether rocks and water, culture or cycling will be your main focus.

Gorge, Rocks and the Barba

Rehaupal lies in a narrow glacial valley crossed by the Barba. Le Trou de l’Enfer offers a landscape more focused on rock and water: boulders form a jumble of rocks, while the Barba flows there in places through rushing cascades and disappears beneath the rocks for about 200 metres. Le Trou de l’Enfer is a classified site, protected since 10 December 1910, covering 16.54 hectares. A hiking trail leads to the gorge.

Milling History and Stained Glass

The Minoterie Viry at Le Moulin in Rehaupal is a hydraulic mill. It was built between 1949 and 1952. Grain cultivation and processing are also part of the local milling story: at Moulin Viry, grain is grown locally and processed by a farmer-miller; this activity has continued for ten generations. Thus, a clearly defined construction period and an agricultural activity spanning generations offer different perspectives on time. Those interested in cultural history can complement this account of working life with an art-focused look at Rehaupal. For a hydraulic mill, the term refers to a water-powered drive and therefore to how it works technically.

Église Saint-Pierre de Rehaupal is adorned with stained-glass windows by the glass artist Gabriel Loire. The church offers a cultural focus distinct from milling history: here, stained glass takes centre stage. Self-guided visits are available for individual visitors. Check before your visit whether this option is currently available. This keeps your plans subject to the stated condition, without assuming that a visit is always possible.

Mountain Bike Circuit Starting at Église de Rehaupal

The red mountain bike circuit No. 10 Rehaupal–Champdray starts at Église de Rehaupal. It is 19 kilometres long and has 510 metres of positive elevation gain. Distance and elevation gain describe two different aspects of the circuit and give a clearer idea of the planned ride. The starting point is also the church, whose stained-glass windows are attributed to Gabriel Loire; a cultural theme and a designated cycling route thus meet at the same named landmark. Route details may change if local signposting changes. Therefore, check the markings on site before setting off.
