Fontenoy-Le-Château combines buildings from several centuries with embroidery history and trails along the edge of the forest. At Les Fontaines Chaudes, a natural spring emerges at 24 °C; a trail there also leads to stands of beech trees and old oaks. Visitors can choose between culture, crafts and nature, each offering a different focus.

Buildings and Local History

The castle ruins of Fontenoy-Le-Château include the oldest keep in Lorraine. It was built at the end of the 10th century on a rocky outcrop overlooking the village. The Tour des Lombards is another historical landmark: this listed monument has two artillery chambers stacked one above the other. Its design resembles buildings from the late 14th century. The history of the Church of Saint-Mansuy also reaches back further: it was built between 1450 and 1480 on a Romanesque structure dating from the beginning of the 11th century.

“Fontenoy-le-Château se raconte en balade” is a historical walking tour through the village. Several stops provide ways to discover the area. This offers a different approach to local history from visiting individual buildings: rather than focusing on a single monument, the tour links several stops around the village. If you include this tour in your plans, check the visiting arrangements in advance.

Embroidery History and Visits

The Musée de la Broderie is dedicated to the skill of the local embroiderers. It documents almost 150 years of work by embroiderers for the international elite. The museum therefore focuses not only on the craft itself, but also on the long history of the work associated with it.

Individual visits to the Musée de la Broderie are possible without a guide; guided visits are available on request. As visiting arrangements may vary seasonally, check them before your trip. This lets you plan a museum visit without assuming that a guided tour is required.

The Les broderies de Béa workshop showcases handmade whitework embroidery. Visits are possible on request; opening arrangements are seasonal or depend on the request. If you would like to complement your museum visit with another look at textile craftsmanship, also check with the workshop in advance.

Spring, Forest and Trails

Les Fontaines Chaudes brings together two natural features in one place: a natural spring with a water temperature of 24 °C emerges at the edge of the forest, and a trail leads from there to stands of beech trees among the tallest in France, as well as oaks that are several centuries old. The trail offers a different focus from the village’s buildings. For hikers, the marked Circuit des Grandes Manches starts at the municipal campsite. Local trail conditions can change, so check them before setting off.

For a bike ride, the Voie Bleue is another option: its smooth, paved section runs from Girancourt to Fontenoy-Le-Château. Check the surface and maintenance before setting out. The two routes have different reference points: the start of the Circuit des Grandes Manches is specified as the municipal campsite, while the Voie Bleue is described as running from Girancourt to the village. This information can help you choose the route that best suits the focus of your outing.

Whether you are most interested in architectural history, embroidery or nature trails, Fontenoy-Le-Château offers a range of specific places to explore. Visits to the museum and workshop require a request or checking seasonal arrangements; for the trails, check local conditions and the state of the Voie Bleue before setting off.
