The Église Saint-Maur is a hall church built from local sandstone in the 19th century. It was rebuilt in 1876 over the remains of an earlier Romanesque structure. The year therefore refers to the reconstruction; the Romanesque remains point to an older church building. This sequence offers two distinct reference points for the church’s architectural history.

Romanesque and Gothic Forms in the Église Saint-Maur

The architecture itself also reveals a contrast: the church retains a Romanesque narthex, offset from the nave. The choir and aisles, by contrast, are designed in the Flamboyant Gothic style. A narthex is an entrance vestibule, while the nave is the church’s main longitudinal space. The different forms can be seen side by side in this building, without reducing it to a single architectural style.

The Église Saint-Maur is in the heart of the village and is open to the public daily. In this rural area, it is regarded as an important cultural, historical and landscape landmark. Check current opening hours before your visit.

Other Buildings and Religious Heritage

The Château de Gemmelaincourt is an 18th-century château. It adds another clearly defined period to the church’s architectural history. Le Jardin des Lys also has its own history: the manor house was built towards the end of the 19th century on the site of two former farms. The estate includes a park and agricultural outbuildings. The former farm sites and outbuildings give the manor house a different historical context from the church’s building phases and the château.

A calvary is also part of Gemmelaincourt’s religious heritage. This identifies another religious landmark in the village besides the Église Saint-Maur.

Nature in the Regional Context

The INPN edition dated 12 June 2024 lists Gemmelaincourt among the municipalities in the ZNIEFF type 2 area “Vergers de Mirecourt”. At the wider-area level, amphibians, reptiles, birds, butterflies, beetles, ferns, flowering plants and orthopterans are listed as groups of interest. Nature is therefore presented in a regional context, adding a different perspective on the surrounding area to the architectural history.

The Haras de Castille is a horse-breeding establishment in a green setting in Gemmelaincourt. As part of the local character, it represents a different point of interest from the historic buildings: horse breeding and a green setting go hand in hand here. This does not imply specific visitor access or a visitor programme.

Cooking Classes with Meals

Le Jardin des Lys offers cooking classes with meals. This is a culinary point of interest alongside the village’s architectural and regional themes. As availability should be checked before travelling, only include a class in your plans once you have found a suitable date.
