Rédange combines time by the ponds with hiking and local history. The ponds are used for fishing and walking; the Boucle de Belval et de l’Étang starts in the village, and the Beler flows through it. At the same time, its historical themes range from Gallo-Roman finds to the blast furnaces of the industrial era. If you would like to combine outdoor activities and cultural history on a trip, Rédange offers a range of ways to do so.

Ponds, leisure and hiking

Leisure activities, cultural events and festivals are held every year at the ponds in Rédange. If you would like to plan your stay around a particular festival, check the event date in advance. This will let you plan your visit around an event without assuming a particular season or date.

One of Rédange’s ponds served as a reservoir for a nearby former steelworks foundry. This means that a former industrial function is also part of the history of the village’s waters. The reservoir’s purpose and the ponds’ recreational use represent different chapters: the ponds are used for fishing and walking, while one pond is connected to the former steel industry.

The Boucle de Belval et de l’Étang hike starts in Rédange. It first follows the circuit de l’Etang, then passes through the picturesque Beler Valley. The Beler River also flows through Rédange; the Beler Valley is part of the described hiking route. These two details provide different kinds of orientation: the river is part of the village, while the hike has a starting point and a sequence of sections. If you would like to include a hike in your travel plans, here is a named route that starts in Rédange.

Archaeology, church and industrial history

Gallo-Roman coins and pottery fragments from the same period were found in gardens in the old village. Merovingian graves were also uncovered in Rédange in the late 19th century. The 2023 tourism guide concludes from the archaeological discoveries that the village was already inhabited more than 2,000 years ago. The finds and the early settlement inferred from them give the village’s history a long-term perspective.

The industrial history also covers a range of topics. Rédange had a second mine, the Heydt Mine. During industrialisation, there were up to three blast furnaces; two of them were operated by the Société des Mines et Usines de Rédange-Dilling. In addition, one pond formerly served as a reservoir for a nearby steelworks foundry. Mining, blast furnaces and the foundry are therefore distinct aspects of Rédange’s industrial past.

The Church of Saint-Brice was consecrated in 1897. Its organs date from 1926 and were built by Franz Kriess. Jean-Georges Koenig modified them in 1954–1955. The consecration of the church and the history of the organs thus mark different points in time: the organs were added later and subsequently modified. Alongside the archaeological and industrial themes, the church provides another historical point of interest for exploring Rédange.
