Puxe offers several distinct highlights for a culture- and nature-focused stay: the history of the Château de Puxe, the building phases of the Église Saint-Rémy, the château park with its arboretum, and a longer hike. The château and church offer glimpses into different periods; outdoors, you can choose between walks in the park and the Circuit des trois rivières. The hike’s distance and approximate walking time are provided, making it easier to plan your time.

Château, Park and Variety of Trees

The origins of the Château de Puxe date back to the 17th century. Before the French Revolution, it first belonged to the La Tour family and then to the Saintignon family. The history of the château thus presents its origins and succession of owners as two distinct historical perspectives. For more than 50 years, the Château welcomed thousands of visitors for holiday camps, spiritual retreats, banquets and family gatherings.

The Parc du Château de Puxe is an arboretum and has received the « Ensemble arboré remarquable » designation from the A.R.B.R.E.S. association. More than 40 tree species have been recorded in the park. A majestic chestnut avenue leads walkers through the Parc and creates a solemn yet soothing atmosphere. The park is ideal for walking and exploring. The avenue, as a route through the grounds, and the arboretum, as a botanical highlight, give the walk distinct points of interest.

The Building History of the Église Saint-Rémy

The main building phases of the Église Saint-Rémy date from the third quarter of the 12th century, the 16th century and the last quarter of the 19th century. The Romanesque church was rebuilt in the 16th century, except for the lower part of the façade, the choir and the apse. The apse lost its original vault but retained its arcade decoration. Its building history therefore spans the Middle Ages through the 19th century, with the 16th-century rebuilding forming a distinct phase.

The historical highlights differ: for the Château, the focus is on its origins, the succession of families and its former uses; for Saint-Rémy, it is on the building phases and changes to individual parts of the structure.

Hiking the Circuit des trois rivières

The Circuit des trois rivières is a 15 km hiking trail in Puxe. It takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes to walk, though this may vary depending on the person and conditions. The trail starts outside the Château de Puxe. Unlike a walk through the park, the Circuit is a longer hike with a defined route and approximate walking time. This means you can choose between a walk focused on the park and its trees, and a hike with a clearer time commitment when planning your visit.
