The local history of Villelongue-De-La-Salanque comes to life at Saint-Marcel Church, the Saint-Sébastien Chapel and the Portalet. There are also plaques about local heritage sites and municipal sports facilities. The two religious buildings differ in their architecture, dating and features, each offering a distinct focus for exploring the town.

Saint-Marcel: Building History and Features

Saint-Marcel Church was first mentioned in 1177 and is a single-nave Romanesque building. Its square bell tower is of the Lombard type, dates from the 16th century and was restored in 1895. At around 30 metres tall and with 11 different bells, the tower is a striking feature of the building. The height is approximate.

The church’s furnishings also add to the picture: it preserves several crucifixes and numerous Baroque statues from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Romanesque building and the later works of art thus represent distinct aspects of the town, whose history cannot be reduced to a single date.

The church can be visited or used for prayer on Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Check visiting arrangements again before your arrival.

Saint-Sébastien, the Portalet and Heritage

The Saint-Sébastien Chapel was first mentioned in 1556 and is distinguished by its characteristic red-brick masonry. Inside, it houses a statue of the saint pierced by arrows. Two round windows fill the chapel with coloured light. The chapel is open daily; check visiting information again before your arrival.

The Portalet is an archway beside the church that provides access to Place de la République. It was once one of the gates of the historic Cellera. The structure thus brings together its former role as a gate and its present-day connection to the square.

In the town centre and the surrounding countryside, plaques installed by the local history and heritage preservation association provide information about sites and features of Villelongue-De-La-Salanque’s heritage.

Town Boundaries and Sports Facilities

A watercourse forms the southern boundary of Villelongue-De-La-Salanque. To the north, this role is taken by the Agouille de l’Auca, a former course of the Têt. These details help distinguish the boundaries by direction.

Padel and tennis courts are located at the Aire de sport et de Loisirs, behind the Parcours de Santé. The courts must be reserved; check the booking arrangements before using them. The municipal skate park is next to the Parcours de Santé, at 107 Avenue du Littoral. Check the availability of the skate park and the Parcours before your arrival.
