Twenty-two signs at historic sites make the municipal heritage trail a tangible way to explore Claira’s history: the trail offers a walk through the town’s past. The locations of the signs may change. If you want to combine your stay with cultural discoveries, you can include this walking route alongside visits to individual historic buildings. Claira is accessible via the A9 motorway and the RD 83.

Mills and landscapes along the route

The “Moulins et Chapelle” route offers a clearly defined walk: it is graded easy, is 8.7 kilometres long, takes 2 hours and 30 minutes, and has an elevation gain of 15 metres. The walk leads to the Moulin de la Torre, Claira’s historic watermill, and the Saint Pierre chapel. It first follows a cycle path through vineyards to the voie verte, then continues between orchards and the Agly River. You may be able to spot herons there. Check the signs and conditions before setting out.

Windmill and watermill

The Moulin de la Torre is a windmill built in a typically Catalan style from stone and cayroux stone. In 2012, it was restored and fitted out using traditional methods by the Les Moulins de Claira association. Interior visits are not available every day, but only on days organised by volunteers; check the visiting day before you go. Bread made from local organic flour from the Moulin de la Torre is sold during its events.

Claira’s historic watermill dates back to the 15th century and is linked to an irrigation canal on the Agly’s embankments. Its grounds are used as a recreational area. The mill therefore brings together architectural history, its connection with water, and the grounds’ present-day use—offering a different perspective from the Moulin de la Torre windmill.

Church and historic layers

Saint-Vincent Church has Romanesque origins and was modified in the 14th century when side chapels were added. Its bell tower houses two bells dating from 1328. Inside are an altarpiece at the high altar and an organ from the early 20th century. The bells and organ add furnishings from different periods to the building’s history. Opportunities to visit the church interior may vary.

Saint Pierre de Vilario is an old hermitage, originally built on the remains of a village that has since disappeared. Claira’s historic buildings are thus also connected to the story of a place that no longer exists.

Plan your stay

If you’re looking for a hotel in Claira, these highlights can help you plan: the walk with 22 signs on local history, the architecture of Saint-Vincent and the mills, or the clearly timed “Moulins et Chapelle” walk. The route offers a specific combination of duration, distance and elevation gain; visits to the interiors of the mill and church, by contrast, are subject to their own conditions. This way, you can decide which experiences you want to make the focus of your stay.
