Saillagouse brings together several distinct themes for an exploratory trip: the architectural history of the Église Sainte Eugénie, routes to megalithic sites, a panorama across Cerdagne, and a museum dedicated to charcuterie. This lets you consciously choose how to balance heritage, walking, views, and regional craftsmanship during your stay.
Church architecture and protected art
The Église Sainte Eugénie de Saillagouse is mentioned in the 839 consecration record of Urgell Cathedral. The southern part of the present-day building belongs to the Romanesque architectural period of the 12th and 13th centuries; this classification applies to that part of the building, not to the church as a whole. The Retable du Christ dates from the third quarter of the 18th century and is listed as a Monument historique. The ensemble comprising the rosary altarpiece, statues, altar, and altar steps has been protected as a movable object since 15 February 2000. The various details therefore concern the church, part of its structure, and individual works of art, each with a different historical classification.
Walking routes and megalithic sites
For the routes, the starting point and destination are useful landmarks. The CamĂ de LlĂvia – Gorguja (PR® 19) begins at Saillagouse church square. The Via Romana starts at the petrol station opposite Place de Cerdagne and leads to a menhir and a megalithic bridge. You can optionally continue to the Dolmen Pascarets and Lou Pou. If you want to focus on megalithic sites, visit them along the Via Romana; the CamĂ is identified by its starting point at the church square. Check current route conditions before setting off.
The panorama at Monument Lax
Monument Lax is located within the municipality of Saillagouse and offers views across the French and Spanish plains of Cerdagne as far as the Cadi mountain range. This view adds a landscape perspective to your choice of art and cultural history themes.
Charcuterie at the museum
Since 1996, the Musée de la charcuterie cerdane has been located at the edge of Saillagouse on the road to Estavar. It features a natural drying room with more than 1,500 hanging hams. An exhibition and video room explains the craft of charcutiers and how it has developed. The museum thus pairs the product on display with an explanation of the craft. Check visiting arrangements before you travel.
Leisure activities with different conditions
The leisure options also vary considerably. Fishing area number 3 is open to all anglers with a valid fishing licence for no-kill fishing and has fishing platforms for people with disabilities. Check fishing regulations and access conditions before your trip. The Espace play area has slides, swings, spring riders, and climbing equipment for children aged 3 to 12. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check their current status before visiting.
