Argelès-sur-Mer can be explored from three distinct perspectives: remembrance and local heritage, protected coastal and natural areas, and outdoor routes and activities. The following places offer specific points of interest for each.

Cultural History and Remembrance

The Mémorial du camp d’Argelès-sur-Mer is a municipal museum and place of remembrance, integrated into the city’s Department of Culture and Heritage. Its permanent exhibition combines an interactive presentation with films, audiovisual oral history accounts and archival documents. Different forms of interpretation complement one another: interactive design, moving images, personal testimonies and historical documents are presented in the same exhibition context. A dedicated space for temporary exhibitions complements the permanent exhibition, hosting changing exhibitions throughout the year.

The Casa de l'Albera offers another way to explore local history. This municipal cultural venue is located in the heart of Argelès-sur-Mer and features a permanent exhibition as well as temporary exhibitions. The fully renovated traditional house presents the history, culture, heritage and traditional know-how of Argelès and the Albères massif. Four exhibitions, including a temporary exhibition, cover the geology of the Albères, Catalan history and customs, and agricultural occupations.

At the Église Notre-Dame-dels-Prats, the church and bell tower can be distinguished by their dates: the church was built in the 10th century, while its 34-metre-high bell tower dates from the 14th century. The church contains 103 works of art. These two dates offer a specific point of reference for the different historical contexts of the church building and the tower.

Coast, Landscape and Natural Areas

Argelès-sur-Mer brings together sandy and rocky coastlines and the rugged peaks of the Albères massif. It also features the agricultural and natural landscapes of the Roussillon plain, parks and protected natural areas. Nature enthusiasts can keep these different landscape themes in mind when planning, rather than treating them as a single destination.

The Natura 2000 site Embouchure du Tech et grau de la Massane (FR9101493) is associated with Argelès-sur-Mer. It consists of a continental and a maritime section; the maritime section lies within the Parc naturel marin du golfe du Lion. This distinction highlights two different areas within the same site. North of Argelès-sur-Mer, the dune at Plage de la Marenda is home to protected and rare Mediterranean coastal species. The discovery trail in the Mas Larrieu nature reserve is freely accessible to the public year-round, 24 hours a day.

Nature Trails and Outdoor Activities

Parc de Valmy is free to access and offers shaded woodland, a family picnic area and a children’s playground. Its botanical and cultural discovery trail features around 15 themed panels on the history, culture, heritage, fauna and flora of Argelès-sur-Mer and the Albères. The trail brings together a range of nature and history topics. Parc de Valmy is also the starting point for several hikes, as well as mountain biking and Nordic walking routes. The discovery trail has a different focus from these activities: it combines botanical and cultural content, while the other routes offer different ways to get around.

At Plage du Racou, visitors can explore coves with a mask and snorkel, spearfish and go paddleboarding. Alongside cultural visits and walks in green spaces, there are also specific activities to choose from along the coast.
