If you choose Bélesta as a destination, you can plan your stay around a range of themes: prehistoric burial practices, medieval architecture, water engineering and wine. For practical planning, it helps to distinguish between archaeological context, an interpretive walking route and a wine experience that includes a 4x4 drive. You can then choose the type of discovery that interests you most.

Prehistory and medieval architecture

The archaeological discovery in the prehistoric cave of La Cauna was a collective tomb containing around 30 people; finds included intact grave goods vessels. The Dolmen du Moli del Vent is an exceptionally well-preserved Bronze Age burial site, dated to around 2500 BC. The find from La Cauna dates to around 4500 BC. The approximate dates are about two millennia apart, placing the two burial sites in different prehistoric periods.

The history of the Château de Caladroy began in the 11th century: Seigneur Adroario had a fortified medieval castle built there at that time to defend the border between the Kingdom of France and the kings of Mallorca. The Château-Musée de Bélesta is a separate site. It is housed in a medieval castle dating from the 12th to 13th centuries. One exhibition area is devoted to the Scottish architect, designer and painter Charles Rennie Macintosh. Thus, the 11th-century border history and a later-dated castle with its own exhibition theme stand side by side.

The site of Saint-Barthélémy-de-Jonquerolles includes a pre-Romanesque church and former outbuildings that were used to store provisions. The church and former storage buildings illustrate the site’s different functions: religious architecture and the storage of provisions in the past.

Water engineering and trail character

The Parcours d’Eau starts in Bélesta and is an easy 6.8-kilometre circular route. It follows an old canal to a mill. Three information panels explain the history and workings of the canal and mill. The route brings to life the historic water-engineering heritage that shaped the agricultural and rural landscape. Check local conditions before setting out.

À travers les âges follows roads and paths through rugged terrain. The route includes climbs and descents, as well as fast and technical sections; its suitability depends on conditions. This clearly distinguishes it from the Parcours d’Eau, described as an easy 6.8-kilometre circular route: here, the terrain and type of section shape the outing, while the other route follows a circular course, canal and mill.

Wine and accommodation

The Château de Caladroy offers direct wine sales and tastings at the estate. Check opening arrangements before travelling. The Wine-Safari at Domaine Riberach is a 2.5-hour 4x4 drive around Bélesta, including a cellar tour and a tasting of Riberach wines. As the visitor offer may change, check current options before your visit. The experiences are therefore quite different: the estate focuses on direct sales and tastings, while the safari combines a drive with a cellar tour and wine tasting.

The former cooperative winery in the village of Bélesta has also been transformed: today, it offers upscale accommodation and dining while preserving its winemaking and historical character.
