A chapel whose history dates back to 876 and a network of marked trails: Pézilla-La-Rivière combines a rich heritage with activities around the Ecoparc Catalan. Its historical landmarks range from a Roman altar to medieval fortifications. There are also guided activities and a wine tasting—different reasons to explore the area according to your interests.

Chapel and Church: History Spanning Several Centuries

The Chapelle Saint Saturnin was first mentioned in 876. Its construction began in the Romanesque period; in the 14th century, it was rebuilt and extended in the Gothic style. Visigothic tombs from the 7th and 8th centuries can be seen behind the altar. The chapel thus brings together architectural history and an archaeological testament from another era.

Several historic artworks and furnishings take centre stage in the Église des Saintes-Hosties. These include a 1st-century Roman altar dedicated to Diana and Apollo. The church also contains a 6th-century Visigothic chancel screen. Its 28 stained-glass windows depict episodes from the history of the Saintes Hosties, as well as images of saints. Together, these details offer different ways to explore the area's history: through ancient dedications, early medieval art and the scenes depicted in the windows.

Gates, Fortifications and Local History

The Porte du Revelli was the main gate of Pézilla-La-Rivière. In the 14th century, it was incorporated into the town's fortifications as a defensive tower. In 1882, the gate was converted into a civic bell tower; its wrought-iron campanile is classified as a historic monument. The transformation from fortified town gate to bell tower can thus be traced in a single structure.

The Cellera of Pézilla was established in the early 11th century. At the time, houses replaced the granaries built around the church, while village fortifications were constructed all around. This development tells of a change in the settlement's layout: houses and fortifications followed the granaries around the church. Another testament to local tradition is the Croix des Outrages, an 18th-century cross in the Catalan tradition.

Trails and Activities in the Ecoparc Catalan

Pézilla-La-Rivière is one of four municipalities included in the Ecoparc Catalan's 109-kilometre network of marked trails. The network was inaugurated in July 2025. It is accessible on foot, for trail running and by mountain bike, and is connected to the Es Têt greenway. Those interested in outdoor exercise can therefore choose between several ways of getting around, each offering a different trail experience.

The Ecoparc's other activities also offer a range of experiences. The free Ecoparc Escape Game is available year-round and includes a route in Pézilla-La-Rivière where players must retrieve an enchanted chalice. Free guided group tours focus on renewable energy generation and the development and operation of a wind farm. On guided tours in all-terrain electric scooters, participants explore the area's natural, historical and technological heritage. The playful storyline, themed group visit and guided scooter tour are distinct formats.
