Fenouillet is a historic village on a rocky spur at an altitude of 530 metres, at the intersection of former routes. The village’s history includes the remains of Castel Sabarda and the former Saint-André church; several hiking trails also pass through the Saint-Jaume Gorges or by Tour Sabarda. Cultural history and hiking therefore offer two specific focal points when planning a stay.
Hiking trails and different time estimates
The GR®36 crossing from Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes to Bourg-Madame passes through Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes, Fenouillet and Fosse. The route takes in the Saint-Jaume Gorges, Château de Fenouillet and Tour Sabarda, combining a longer crossing with a variety of cultural and landscape features.
The “Sentier de Fenouillet” starts in Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes and is an easy 9 km hike marked with GR and PR trail signs. For 1.3 km, it passes through the narrow Saint-Jaume Gorges before crossing a small bridge. The passage through the gorges itself takes about 20 minutes. The 9 km refers to the entire hike, while the approximate time refers to the passage through the gorges. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
The “Propriétés du Vicomte de Fenouillet” hiking trail runs below Tour Sabarda. From there, the tower can be reached via a five-minute round-trip detour. This time estimate covers the entire walk to and from the tower, not just one way. By comparison, the approximately 20 minutes refers to the passage through the gorges, not a detour to a single structure.
Castel Sabarda and Saint-André
The remains of Castel Sabarda have been listed as a historic monument since 27 October 2015. The site is a rare outlying fortification of remarkable homogeneity and formed part of the surveillance system along the former border. This connection with border surveillance places the fortification within a broader historical context.
The remains of the former Saint-André church lie at the foot of Castel Sabarda. A papal bull from 1011 mentions it as part of the property of the Monastery of Saint-Pierre de Fenouillet. The two years refer to different things: 1011 to the mention of the church remains, and 2015 to the listing of the remains of Castel Sabarda as a historic monument.
Château Saint-Pierre: access and views
Château Saint-Pierre de Fenouillet is open year-round and admission is free; information panels are on site. The château offers panoramic views of the village, the Saint-Jaume Gorges and Tour Sabarda, bringing together several of the local and landscape features mentioned above.
From the entrance car park in Fenouillet, the château is a two-minute walk away. Access information may change, so please check before your visit.
There is a shaded picnic area at Notre-Dame de Laval. If you are planning to stop there for a break, check the current facilities beforehand, as they may change.
For planning your day, the information can be distinguished by scale: a GR®36 crossing through several villages, a 9 km hike with an approximately 20-minute passage through the gorges, and a five-minute round-trip detour to Tour Sabarda. Which option shapes your stay depends on whether you would rather focus on a hike, individual historic structures, or both.
