Millas brings together historic architecture, art at Sainte Eulalie, olive oil traditions and trails to Força Real. When planning a stay, these themes are easy to distinguish: the church and fortifications tell the story of the past, the botanical trail focuses on the landscape and vegetation, while the olive mills offer tours about olive oil. The town park also has a playground and cultural exhibitions. You can therefore tailor your plans to whether you want to focus on architectural history, nature or local production.
Art and History in Millas
The parish church of Sainte Eulalie is first mentioned in the 12th century. It houses a collection of historic art assembled over more than half a millennium to decorate the village church. Another specific historical detail concerns the monumental gallery: it measures 120 m² and was built between 1440 and 1442. These dates place the church’s history in several different periods: its early mention, the gallery’s construction and a collection assembled over five centuries.
The Barbacane Chicane preserves the outline of a barbican that defended the entrance to the first town fortifications. La Portalade is a fortified Gothic gate; it protected a walled district where the harvests from Millas’s farms were stored. The structures served different fortification purposes: defending an entrance and protecting a storage district along with its harvest supplies.
Town Park and Exhibitions
Millas town park has a children’s playground and the Laurier exhibition space for cultural and artistic exhibitions. The same park thus offers something for children as well as a place for culture. The exhibition program and facilities may change; check the latest information about the park and exhibitions when planning your visit.
Força Real: Panorama and Botanical Trail
The 507 m-high rocky summit of Força Real overlooks the Têt and Agly valleys. From there, the view extends across the Roussillon plain, the sea, the Albères, the Têt Valley and the Corbières. Millas’s botanical trail to Força Real adds a more specific focus to the landscape views: 45 botanical panels introduce the surrounding vegetation.
The botanical trail is listed as taking around 1 hour 30 minutes and is graded easy. The duration and grade apply to this trail. The Força Real loop can also be started in Millas. Trail conditions may change, so check the condition of the route you plan to take before setting off.
Olive Oil: Traditions and Tours
La Catalane continues an artisanal tradition of harvesting and producing Mediterranean olive oil. A tour of the olive mill includes an exhibition on the history of olive growing and ends with a free tasting of its own products. A visit to Moulin Saint Pierre is free; you can sample its olive oil during the visit. The experiences differ in focus: La Catalane also has an exhibition on the history of olive growing, while at Moulin Saint Pierre, the tasting takes center stage during the visit. Tours and dates may change; check in advance.
From the MILLAS – Foiral bus stop, La Catalane is less than a 20-minute walk away; from Millas railway station, it is less than a 30-minute walk. These are walking times, not distances. As routes may change depending on conditions, check the route before your visit.
