Escaro is best discovered through its mining history: hiking trails lead to remnants of past mining, while the Musée de la Mine offers insights into everyday life connected with mining. A chapel in Aytua and a Natura 2000 site provide other points of interest. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the specifically described hike to the Gare minière de la Vista from the other mining traces.

Mining History Between the Landscape and the Museum

Until the early 1960s, Escaro was one of the major iron ore mining centers in the Canigó Massif. The circular trail to the Gare minière de la Vista follows a former railway line and reveals remnants of the Escaro–Aytua mining history. At the Musée de la Mine in Escaro, this history is presented through a unique collection of tools and everyday objects. The two offer different perspectives: outdoors, the focus is on the former railway line and its mining remnants; in the museum, it is on tools and objects from daily life.

Hikes with Different Focuses

The hike to the Gare minière de la Vista is described as easy, 8.3 kilometers long, and taking three hours without breaks. It starts at the parking area at the junction of the D27 and D27d, at an elevation of 880 meters. Allow extra time for breaks when planning your schedule. Trail conditions and waymarking may change; you should also check local road and parking conditions before setting out.

Another hike leads to the former mining concessions. It reveals the traces of a fluorite quarry in the landscape and passes rails, inclined conveyor systems, and abandoned mining carts. The focus thus shifts from the former railway line to the mining equipment and the visible effects of extraction. Those interested in industrial landscapes will find a different emphasis here than on the circular trail to the Gare minière de la Vista.

The Circuit de Bailloubère also follows the history of ore mining. At Le Bac, it follows a former railway line along which iron ore from the Aytua mines was transported to an inclined conveyor system above Serdinya. This makes it possible to trace the former transport route from the ore workings to the conveyor system.

Sainte-Christine Chapel in Aytua

The small Sainte-Christine Chapel stands in Aytua. A will prompted its construction in 1592; it was built shortly afterward. The chapel has been fully preserved and was completely restored from 2014 to 2016. A newly installed display case in the sacristy features several objects, two statues, and a 17th-century chalice. Its construction history, restoration, and furnishings offer a cultural and historical perspective distinct from the industrial past.

Nature in the Natura 2000 Site

The “Pins de Salzmann du Conflent” Natura 2000 site includes Escaro as well as Fuilla, Sahorre, Serdinya, and Souanyas. The short-toed snake eagle, an eagle that feeds exclusively on reptiles, breeds in the area. Nature enthusiasts will find a distinct point of interest alongside the mining traces: here, the focus is on the wildlife of the protected area, while the trails and museum highlight industrial history.
