In Cassagnes, trails lead from the village into the countryside, while Château de Cuxous, with its courtyard, offers a link to the area’s history. For finding your way around, there are several options to consider: an easy trail to Pic Aubeil, circular routes with clearly stated distances, and a look at the Château’s architectural history.

Landscape and surroundings

Vineyards shape the landscape of Cassagnes to the north and east. The Agly Valley lies to the west, and a small massif to the south. These directions define the changing landscape: vineyards, valley and ridge are all part of the commune’s described area, without forming a single excursion destination.

Lac de l’Agly is 4 km from Cassagnes. Hiking, fishing and other outdoor activities are possible there. Local conditions for activities at the lake may vary. The lake is therefore a separate destination, alongside the trails that start in Cassagnes or pass through the surrounding area.

Hiking trails with different profiles

The Chemin des Capitelles is a very easy 5.1 km circular trail. It is considered suitable for families and is partly shaded. The trail starts at the car park on Route de Picaubeil in Cassagnes. When planning, you can therefore consider the distance, difficulty rating and starting point together; local trail conditions may vary.

The Sentier du Barrage is also a circular trail, but at 6.4 km it is longer and rated easy. Its landscape is quite different: the trail passes the large Agly reservoir and alternates between vineyard slopes, garrigue or maquis, and oak forests. When comparing the two circular trails, you can consider their length and the landscape described: the Chemin des Capitelles is shorter and very easy, while the Sentier du Barrage is longer and passes through several types of landscape.

Another option is the easy Balcon du Pic Aubeil trail. It leads from the village of Cassagnes to Pic Aubeil, at an elevation of 541 metres. At the top, there are 360° panoramic views of vineyards, villages in the Fenouillèdes, Lac de l’Agly and its dam. Unlike the circular trails, this route focuses on the journey from the village to a named destination; the panorama brings together several of the landscape features that also define Cassagnes.

Château de Cuxous and local history

The first recorded mention of Château de Cuxous dates back to 1119. Its square ground plan consists of four wings surrounding a courtyard. The Château is partially protected as a historic monument in France. Its design and courtyard offer a tangible way to explore the area’s history, while its partial protected status describes the building’s historic designation.

One trail also connects with the area’s history: the Chemin des Capitelles follows an old route that linked Cassagnes with Latour-de-France via Chapelle Saint-Martin in the vineyards until 1865. This places the trail within the context of an earlier connection between the two villages. The Circuit des Châteaux passes Château de Cuxous and includes the building along its route.

When choosing a trail, you can start with what you are looking for: a very easy, shorter circular route, a longer circular route through changing landscapes, or a trail from the village to a viewpoint. The Château and the history of the trails add two different ways of exploring the area to this perspective on its landscape.
