Canet-En-Roussillon can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: the facilities at Plage Centrale, the fishing culture of the Étang de Canet Saint-Nazaire, and the aquatic experiences at Oniria. The activities also vary considerably, ranging from a 15-kilometer bike tour to water sports lessons and guided introductions to the old town and Château Vicomtal. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether the coast, nature, water activities, or local history should take center stage.
Coast and Water Activities
At Plage Centrale, people with limited mobility can use a shower, changing rooms, an access mat, and a Tiralo beach wheelchair for entering the water. If you rely on one of these facilities, check its current status before your visit; municipal beach facilities may change seasonally.
The Port de Canet has facilities for technical stopovers and stays by recreational boats up to 35 meters long. For travelers with a recreational boat, this limit is a specific point of reference when planning; operating conditions may change, so check any specific requirements in advance. The École de voile Les Voiles Blanches offers rentals, lessons, and courses in stand-up paddleboarding, sea kayaking, catamaran sailing, windsurfing, and wingfoiling. Activities and opening hours may change. Check the current offering if you are planning a particular discipline.
Nature and Fishing Culture at the Lagoon
At the Étang de Canet Saint-Nazaire, you can find typical small fishermen’s huts made of reeds. They bear witness to a traditional fishing way of life that is still very much alive. The lagoon is classified as a Natura 2000 natural area. The “L'étang de Canet” bike tour offers another perspective on this landscape: over 15 kilometers, you can discover the lagoon’s fauna and flora, fishing activities, and local history, accompanied by a coastal ranger. The route length gives you a specific point of reference for the scope of the outing. If you are planning the tour for a particular day, check the available dates.
The Arboretum Canétois covers 14 hectares, 11 of which are home to diverse botanical collections. Visitors can sample fruit straight from the trees; whether fruit is available depends on the season. If tasting fruit is important to your plans, ask about what is available in advance.
Aquarium, Old Town, and Château Vicomtal
Oniria Aquarium has 83 tanks. Virtual and multisensory experiences introduce aquatic ecosystems; Oniria also offers an immersive, interactive journey through the transformations of water. This gives the aquarium a different focus from the bike tour at the lagoon: here, the emphasis is on exploring aquatic themes, while there you can discover the lagoon’s fauna, flora, and fishing history.
Château Vicomtal also combines a specific local history with clearly stated visiting hours. In 1384, the château received Yolande de Ber, niece of King Charles V of France and later Queen of Aragon; in 1415, it received Emperor Sigismund. Visits are possible from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from October 1 to March 31, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. from April 1 to September 30. Check the seasonal hours before your visit.
The guided “Village Authentique” tour winds through the old town of Canet-en-Roussillon and introduces visitors to local traditions, typical architecture, and local anecdotes. If you are planning the tour for a particular travel date, check the dates and availability in the tourism program.
