Lac de Villefort is a destination for swimming and water sports; a loop around the lake and the via ferrata offer a different perspective. Villefort also has church architecture and historical connections to the route.

Lake, Beach and Water Sports

Lac de Villefort covers 137 hectares. The lake has a sandy beach and a swimming area that is supervised in summer. Kayaking and windsurfing are also available; their operation may vary seasonally. This offers two distinct water experiences: swimming at the seasonally supervised swimming area and activities on the water. If kayaking or windsurfing is important to your plans, check the relevant conditions before your visit.

Loop Around the Lake and Via Ferrata

The loop around Lac de Villefort crosses the dam, which was inaugurated in 1964. From Villefort, the loop is about a five-minute drive via the D 906; this time may vary depending on the route and conditions. The dam thus connects a specific historical landmark with the route. The approximate travel time and the loop itself are two separate points to consider when planning.

The Via ferrata Lac de Villefort offers a different perspective, running above the lake. It includes several exposed crossings, including a footbridge, a Nepalese bridge and a zip line. There are two routes: an easy one and a difficult one. The ratings distinguish between the two options; access and safety conditions may vary. Check these before your visit.

Church Architecture and Chapel History

The Eglise Saint-Victorin de Villefort is a parish church with a cohesive Neoclassical design. It has twelve large figurative stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the lives of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. They are works by stained-glass artist Louis-Victor Gesta. The church’s cohesive architectural style and narrative imagery thus offer two distinct aspects to appreciate.

The Chapelle Saint-Loup was demolished in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1621. It is also a 360-degree viewpoint from which you can photograph natural and cultural heritage. At Saint-Loup, a clearly dated building history combines with the opportunity to capture the landscape and cultural heritage in a panoramic view. By comparison, the stained-glass windows at Saint-Victorin draw attention to religious depictions and the work of a stained-glass artist.

The Régordane Connection and Nearby Places

The Chemin de Régordane passes through Villefort. Nearby, in Prévenchères, lies La Garde-Guérin: a fortified medieval town on the Chemin de Régordane, above the Chassezac gorges. The route is thus both a point of reference in Villefort and part of the description of the town’s location.

Another nearby place with historical significance is the manor house of Château de Castanet in Pourcharesses. Its history dates back to the 13th century, and it may be older. This creates a contrast between architectural history and landscape: in Villefort, the church, chapel and Régordane are the focus, while nearby places offer further medieval connections.

When looking for a hotel in Villefort, you can first decide which aspect of the destination matters for your stay: water activities, a route by the lake or cultural history. This way, your choice reflects your interests rather than treating every option as the same travel experience.
