Rock arches, vulture watching with telescopes and a Romanesque church reveal the varied sides of Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers: natural formations, wildlife, history and climbing areas.

Rock Formations and Trails

Baousse del Biel is a 40-metre-high natural arch. Its opening measures 27 metres high and 25 metres wide. It can only be reached on foot via the Sentier de la Baousse del Biel. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

At Les Arcs de Saint-Pierre, erosion has shaped natural arches in the rock amid a forest of Scots pines. The easy Les Arcs de Saint-Pierre circular walk is 5.2586 kilometres long. The route passes a burial cave where trepanations were performed around 3500 BC.

Watch Vultures and Compare Climbing Areas

The Maison des Vautours has an observation terrace with telescopes, where vultures can be watched in the wild. The museum covers vulture physiology, how they are perceived around the world, and the history of their disappearance and reintroduction. Observation and background information about the same group of animals offer different ways to experience a visit.

The Maison des Vautours is less than a ten-minute walk from the Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers – Le Truel bus stop. If you are travelling by bus, check the timetable in advance.

The tourism portal currently lists Le Cirque des Vases as an active climbing area with limestone crags. It lists bolted routes as well as routes in an adventure-climbing style; the approach is given as 20 minutes.

Le Bitard is also listed on the current tourism portal as an active climbing area with limestone crags. It has bolted climbing routes and two routes in an adventure-climbing style. The approach is given as ten minutes.

The stated approach times make the difference clear: ten minutes at Le Bitard compared with 20 minutes at Le Cirque des Vases. They describe the walk to the climbing area, not the time spent climbing, so you can plan the approach separately from the activity.

Romanesque Church and Historic Village

The hamlet of Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers is home to the Romanesque parish church of Saint-Pierre. Its choir dates from the late 11th century. The church can be visited individually, free of charge. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit, as they may change. Numerous old buildings are also part of the hamlet’s historic character. Anyone interested in architectural history will find different points of interest here: the church’s Romanesque architecture and the older building stock.

The hamlet is also home to a 28-metre-high elm, which has been designated an “Arbre Remarquable de France” (Remarkable Tree of France). The tree’s condition may change, even though the designation is permanent.
