The Jonte is one of the main waterways that flow through Gatuzières. There are also hiking and cycling routes, as well as a church with a layered history. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the options by time required and interests: a circular hike, challenging mountain bike routes, historic architecture and a seasonal brewery visit each offer a different focus.

Hiking and mountain biking

The “La forêt de l’Aigoual” route is an 11.7-kilometre circular hike, listed as taking 4.5 hours; it passes through Gatuzières. Along the way, it winds through forests of gnarled beech trees. As an additional option beyond the route, you can take the GR60 to the summit of Aigoual, which can be reached in two hours. The hike and the summit option are therefore two separate outings of different durations that can be considered separately when planning your day.

There are also two clearly different timeframes for mountain bike rides. The “Hures - VTT n°6” route is a difficult, approximately three-hour circular ride covering 23.2 kilometres and passing through Gatuzières. It crosses the Plateau du Causse Méjean through both wooded and open areas. The “Grande Traversée du Massif Central à VTT” is also rated difficult, but at 195.6 kilometres and five days, it is a much longer ride. It passes through Gatuzières and can be completed on a mountain bike or an electric-assist mountain bike. While the Hures loop is a compact ride, the Grande Traversée is a multi-day route. Check the latest route information before setting out.

Church and history

The church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was an old rural priory. Until the Wars of Religion, it was inhabited by a community of Benedictine canons. The building itself also reveals distinct historical layers: the apse is the church’s only Romanesque part. The rest of the building was rebuilt after the devastation of the Wars of Religion in the 16th and 18th centuries. The interior is fully painted and furnished with wooden furniture. For those interested in culture, this offers a distinct focus alongside outings in the countryside: history, architecture and furnishings can all be explored together in a single building.

Brewery and seasonal visits

Les Brasseurs de la Jonte has operated as a craft brewery in Gatuzières since late 2013. In July and August, free tours of the production facility are offered Monday through Friday at 5 p.m., with no reservation required. As this is a seasonal offering, it is best to check the dates before travelling. Tastings are also available at the sales outlet during the season. These seasonal activities provide another possible focus for your stay, whether you are mainly interested in hiking, cycling or the history of the village.

Planning your stay

When looking for a hotel, you can use your planned activities and dates as a guide. The stated durations range from about three hours for the Hures mountain bike loop and 4.5 hours for the hike to five days for the Grande Traversée. There are also seasonal brewery visits and the church’s distinct cultural interest. So first consider which of these activities you would like to shape your days around, and whether a visit in July or August would work for you.
