Three windmills and the base of a fourth are still visible on the Roc de Gachone. In the centre of Calvisson stands the Church of Saint-Saturnin, which has been listed in the Monuments historiques register since 6 December 1949. Both places offer a glimpse into the town’s history—one through visible traces, the other through a building in the town centre.

Discover history on a walking tour

The historic walking tour of Calvisson includes 21 stops. Its themes range from prehistory and the Middle Ages to religious history and the development of water management, viticulture and the community. With historical explanations in clear, accessible language, you can complete the tour as a walk of about two and a half hours. It brings together different chapters of the town’s history in a format for which you can set aside around half a day.

Those particularly interested in traditional crafts will find a dedicated focus at La Maison du Boutis. The museum workshop is devoted to the traditional relief embroidery known as Boutis. Its unique collection explores the history of this craft, which became an art form in its own right in Provence and Bas-Languedoc in the 18th and 19th centuries. It also features numerous exceptional pieces. Introductory and advanced Boutis courses, as well as special workshops, are held throughout the year. Guided group visits are available by reservation for a maximum of 15 people. Check the dates before you travel.

Viticulture and regional trails

Vinopanorama focuses on viticulture and wine. Across three immersive areas, the interpretation centre presents 27 centuries of wine history and the development of wine across different civilisations. The museum’s indoor exhibition also explains the close connection between the area and wine-growing culture. Together with the stops on the historic walking tour, this offers another perspective on Calvisson’s history: the town across different eras on one hand, and the long history of wine and viticulture on the other.

The Boucle des Olivettes also combines an activity with regional themes. This 21-kilometre circular cycling route starts in Calvisson and is listed as taking about two and a half hours. At the start, the route passes a monumental fresco about the history of viticulture and the remains of the former railway line. The Chemin des Laines offers a different focus: this interpretive trail invites you to discover the pastoral heritage and memory of the Pays de Sommières. Depending on whether you start in Sinsans or Calvisson, the circular route is 14 to 15 kilometres long. Check trail conditions locally.

The historic walk and the Boucle des Olivettes have similar estimated durations, but offer different ways to spend your time: the walk focuses on 21 historic stops, while the cycling tour covers a 21-kilometre route. The Chemin des Laines, with its pastoral theme and longer distance, offers another option. These differences can help you plan your time around the themes and activities that interest you most.
