You can get to know Massillargues-Attuech through its landscape, wine and crafts. A plain shaped by vineyards is part of the character of the commune. The commune comprises three named hamlets. It also has historic buildings. The routes, wine cellar and pottery offer different starting points for planning your trip. You can consider whether to focus your stay more on the landscape, wine products, traditional crafts or local history.

Vineyard landscapes and routes

The “Balade sur le terroir IGP Cévennes” route passes through vineyards in the IGP Cévennes area and along the banks of the Gardon. The route also offers the chance to spot beavers. An audio guide for this route is available through the Latitude Gard smartphone app; the app can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play. The route thus combines specific landscape features with a distinctive nature-watching theme.

The “Cyclo - Balade Vigneronne” cycling route follows paths through the picturesque vineyards of the Cévennes and through Attuech and Massillargues-Attuech. The two routes have different focuses: the Balade adds the banks of the Gardon and the chance to spot beavers to its vineyards, while the cycling route passes through the named localities.

Tastings and wines

Wine is also connected with local products. The Les Vignerons de la porte des Cévennes wine cellar in Massillargues offers product tastings and free tours. Its selection includes IGP Cévennes wines, AOP Duché d’Uzès wines, white and red Cartagène, sparkling wine and organic wines. You can enjoy tastings here and choose from a range of wine categories. If you are planning a visit, it is worth checking the latest visiting conditions.

Crafts and architectural history

At its workshops in Massillargues, Poterie Terre Figuière makes the Vase d’Anduze and a wide selection of other traditionally made products. This gives travellers interested in crafts a tangible product connected with the area. In 2010, Poterie Terre Figuière received the “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” (EPV) award; this date adds a clearly dated distinction to the story of the pottery.

The Château de Massillargues is also part of the area’s architectural history. The private château dates from the 18th century, while its oldest part dates from the 12th century. It is not open to visitors. The dates distinguish the history of the château from that of its oldest section, without presenting the building itself as a visitor attraction.

The commune and its hamlets

Massillargues-Attuech comprises the hamlets of Atuech or Attuech, Massillargues and St-Roman. St-Roman sits on a rise, with the plain on one side and the hills of the hinterland on the other. Many old houses in Massillargues-Attuech were built from stone and pebbles from the Gardon. This means that local character is reflected not only in the landscape but also in the traditional building materials. The three hamlets, St-Roman’s elevated position and the old building style give you several specific points of reference for understanding the commune.
