Discover Saint-Laurent-le-Minier through its water, art and history. Each theme offers a different focus: at the Cascade de la Meuse, the focus is on the waterfall and the Vis; cultural events put art and film centre stage. Historic sites offer insights into the town’s architectural and working history. When planning your visit, you can consider whether you would like to focus primarily on the landscape, events or traces of the past.

Waterfall, Vis and bathing area

The Cascade de la Meuse, also called the Cascade de la Vis, is an artificial waterfall through which the River Vis flows. Both names therefore refer to the same waterfall. The area is within a Natura 2000 zone and is a biodiversity area to be preserved. The waterfall and protected area thus represent two different aspects of a visit: the landscape on the one hand, and the site’s importance as a habitat on the other.

Bathing is permitted in the area around the Cascade, but it is unsupervised and at your own risk. If swimming is important to your travel decision, you should take this restriction into account. Permitted swimming here does not mean that the area is supervised. A visit focused on the natural environment and a bathing holiday involve different expectations, which you can clarify in advance.

Art and festivals

For Chemin d'artistes, artists and craftspeople from Saint-Laurent-le-Minier open their studios, gardens and terraces to visitors over a summer weekend. Visitors can get to know their work. The event focuses on personal insights into artistic and craft practices; it takes place over this summer weekend and should not be considered a year-round offering.

The Ainsi va la Vis festival has been held annually since 2016. It combines street art with music, workshops, a small creative market and a concert evening. It therefore includes several types of events rather than focusing on a single performance. The Cinéma dans les Étoiles festival offers a different cultural focus, presenting animated films from various countries and in different techniques. Invited directors receive the festival’s Étoile d'Or. When planning your dates, note the different schedules: Chemin d'artistes takes place over a summer weekend, while Ainsi va la Vis is held annually. Check the dates that are relevant to your travel period.

Château and historic mills

The Château de Saint-Laurent-le-Minier was built in 1664 by Pierre de Sarret. The precise year and the name of its builder place the château in a specific context within the town’s history. A paper mill in Saint-Laurent is documented from the 1670s, pointing to another historical facet of the town. The château and paper mill represent different themes: architectural history and earlier production.

The Moulin Jourdan complex is also part of the town’s historical heritage. It is located on Rue de la Fabrique and is recorded as a mill and silk filature. It was later known as Filature Lauret and Moulinerie Plagnol. The different names help distinguish the historical designations of the same complex; they do not indicate that it is currently operating or open to visitors.

Landscape and hiking

The partially ruined Hameau des Falguières lies on a spur of the Causse de Blandas above the Vis and offers expansive views of the landscape. This description combines a specific location with the character of the hamlet. For your interests, this landscape setting can offer a different perspective on the surrounding area from the waterfall.

Espace Ceven’Trail No. 18 climbs from Saint-Laurent-le-Minier in the direction of Pic d’Anjeau. It offers a clearly identified hiking route with a destination in the direction of the Pic; the information describes an ascent. The trail and Hameau des Falguières are two different landscape attractions: one is a route starting from the town, while the other is a partially ruined hamlet above the Vis.

Plan a stay that suits you

If you would like to combine your trip with art events, plan around their respective dates. When visiting the waterfall, the lack of supervision for bathing is an important condition to bear in mind. Those particularly interested in history will find several different points of interest in the château, the paper mill, and the former mill and silk filature. You can decide which of these themes will shape your stay before looking for accommodation.
