Barjac offers two distinct ways to plan a stay: architectural history spanning several dated periods, and walks whose route lengths allow for a direct comparison. The Foire Bio de Barjac is another local highlight. You can decide whether the town’s history, a walk in the countryside or the market will shape your trip.

Architecture and history

The Château des Comte du Roure consists of three châteaux of different ages and styles, separated by a courtyard. The ensemble thus brings together several building phases rather than forming a single structure from one period.

The chapel of the Capuchin monastery was built in the second half of the 17th century and is associated with the arrival of Capuchin missionaries in Barjac in 1633. The Église Saint Laurent was built between 1672 and 1692 to replace the older Église Saint Laurent de Maillac on the outskirts of town. It was restored and enlarged in 1862.

The Hôtel particulier Dufour includes a tower dating from the 16th century and is one of the eight towers currently recorded in Barjac’s old town. The Tour Renaissance was also probably built in the 16th century and is considered an outstanding example of Barjac’s architecture. It is privately owned and cannot be visited.

The dates do not point to a single building phase: the chapel dates to the second half of the 17th century, the Église Saint Laurent was built between 1672 and 1692 and altered in 1862, while the Tour Renaissance probably dates from the 16th century. The chronology of these buildings is therefore also important when exploring Barjac’s architectural history.

Walking trails and countryside

The two named routes can be compared directly: “Gaspard se balade à Barjac” is 9 km long, while the “Randonnée Dolmens et capitelles” circular walk is 14.49 km. The circular walk is therefore 5.49 km longer. It starts and ends at the car park on Place du 8 mai in Barjac.

The route passes through woods and garrigue and offers views of the Cévennes. This gives the longer trail a specific landscape setting, while the stated distance for “Gaspard se balade à Barjac” is 9 km. Dolmen I des Oeillantes is described as the most beautiful of Barjac’s dolmens.

Foire Bio de Barjac

The 2026 edition of the Foire Bio de Barjac brings together local organic producers, local crafts and ecological products on Place Charles Guynet. If you are planning to attend a later edition, check its dates in advance.
