A hike of around three and a half hours, a spring outlet that is the visible part of an underground water system, and traces of the area’s industrial past shape the impressions of a trip to Saint-Julien-les-Rosiers. The themes range from practical route planning to nature and history. When choosing where to stay, it is therefore worth considering what you want to shape your day.

Hiking: Duration and route

The Du Carabiol Ă  la Minette circular trail is 11 kilometres long, has 230 metres of elevation gain and is of moderate difficulty. It takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes. It starts at Carabiol in Saint-Julien-les-Rosiers and returns to Saint-Julien-les-Rosiers via the GR44C. The distance, elevation gain, difficulty and approximate duration give you several useful points of reference for planning this hike.

The route description for the Croix de Panissière names Bouzarit and La Gardie as places along the way; the return to Saint-Julien-les-Rosiers also follows the GR44C. The two routes can therefore be distinguished by their destinations and named waypoints: Carabiol for the Du Carabiol à la Minette circular trail, and Bouzarit and La Gardie for the route to the Croix de Panissière.

Arbousse and the Carabiol spring

The Arbousse site is at an altitude of 230 metres and can be reached via a waymarked circular trail. From there, you can discover Alès, Rousson and Brouzet-les-Alès in an exceptional way. Its altitude, the type of route and the three named places give Arbousse a different focus from the circular trail with its stated duration: here, the view of the named towns takes centre stage.

The Carabiol spring is a notable spring outlet and the visible part of a vast, highly complex underground water system. The visible spring area and the extensive underground system make this a nature attraction quite distinct from the historical sites. There is also a swimming pool at the Carabiol site. If the pool is important for your stay, check before travelling whether it will be open on your dates.

Archaeology, industrial history and monastery

The Dolmen du Peyro Blanco is a collective burial site dating from the late Neolithic period. Its tumulus is about 15 metres in diameter. The dolmen is also classified as a historic site and historic monument. The term “collective burial site” gives an indication of the site’s purpose, while the approximate diameter conveys its scale.

The former pyrite mine and sulphuric acid factory at Fonts in La Minette closed permanently in 1961. Ruins of 18th-century buildings and part of the 19th-century buildings remain. The end of operations and the history of the buildings provide different chronological reference points: the closure marks the end of their use, while the ruins date from two centuries.

The Monastère Notre Dame des Fonts was built in the 11th century and consists of a church and a Cistercian nuns’ monastery. The property is privately owned and cannot be visited. If you are considering a visit, check the current access rules beforehand.

Planning your stay

With its approximate duration and specific route details, the Carabiol circuit is a longer hiking option; Arbousse combines a waymarked circular trail with views of three named places. The dolmen and industrial history offer a different focus, while the monastery cannot be visited. Consider whether hiking, scenery or history will shape your trip before looking for hotels.
