Saint-Denis lies at an altitude of 545 m on the southern slope of the Montagne Noire. Two specific features shape any plans here: the bastide, with its cross-shaped layout, and three circular hiking routes that start in the village square. The routes differ in length, elevation gain, difficulty and duration, making it possible to choose the amount of hiking you want from among specific options.
The bastide and local history
The bastide of Saint-Denis was built in the 13th century on a gently sloping hillside. Wide streets and spacious squares are laid out in a cross shape. The bastide was first mentioned in writing in 1293.
Three circular hikes starting from the village square
The Bassin de Saint-Denis circular hike and the Tour de Bes are the two shorter options. Both start in the village square and follow roads and paths through an undeveloped natural area. The Bassin de Saint-Denis circular hike is 5.7 km long, with an elevation gain of 100 m. The Tour de Bes covers 5.5 km and has an elevation gain of 123 m. Both are easy, take about 1 hour 30 minutes each and require no special equipment.
When comparing them, it is worth considering both distance and elevation gain: the Tour de Bes is 0.2 km shorter, but has 23 m more elevation gain. The approximate duration and easy rating are the same for both hikes. Their main differences are therefore the route length and elevation figures, not the stated time required.
The Entre Lavoirs et Fontaines circular hike is a longer option. It also starts in the village square and passes through Saint-Denis, Brousses-et-Villaret and Fontiers-Cabardès. The route is 13 km long, has an elevation gain of 300 m and follows roads and paths through undeveloped natural areas. It is moderately difficult, takes about four hours and requires no special equipment.
The two easy circular hikes take about an hour and a half each, compared with about four hours for the moderately difficult route. The longer route also passes through several named places. Check local conditions before setting out. A tourism listing updated on 25 July 2025 describes EARL Moundy Gilles as a 135-hectare family farm in Saint-Denis, with organic cattle farming in the Montagne Noire Audoise and its own production of raw milk, fromage blanc and farm-made yoghurts.
Water management at the Bassin de Saint-Denis
The Bassin de Saint-Denis is a water reservoir used for irrigation. It covers 7 ha and has a capacity of 304,000 m³. The dam also has its own construction history: it was built in 1835 and raised in 1851.
