In Lignairolles, two trails offer different travel experiences: the Sentier Panoramique turns your attention to the landscape and wide-open views, while the Voie Verte offers several ways to get around. There are also two distinctive features near the church: a statue of the Virgin Mary and an enigmatic sculpture.
Panoramic Views on the Sentier Panoramique
The Sentier Panoramique starts and ends in Lignairolles. This moderately difficult trail is 7.5 km long and offers views of the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees. It follows a ridgeline, passes through meadows, fields and forests, and goes by bodies of water. When choosing a route, both a specific distance and difficulty level, as well as distinctive landscapes, are therefore important considerations.
Before setting out, check the latest route information, as trail specifications can change. The GR78-7, a section of the Way of St James, is also marked in Lignairolles. If you plan to include this route, check the markings and access before setting off. The Sentier Panoramique and the marked section of the Way of St James thus offer different points of reference for exploring on foot.
The Voie Verte: Walking, Cycling and Horse Riding
Between Cailhau and Lignairolles, the Voie Verte can be used for walking, cycling and horse riding. Near Lignairolles, it passes through a deep forest. Unlike the Sentier Panoramique, choosing this route can initially be based on your preferred way of getting around: the other trail is described in terms of length and moderate difficulty, while the Voie Verte is presented as an option for walking, cycling and horse riding.
The Voie Verte is accessible to people with disabilities. Confirm this accessibility information again before travelling; route conditions can also change. This helps you plan around your needs without treating the different route details for the two trails as equivalent.
The Church Grounds, Local Tradition and Town History
In the forecourt of the church in Lignairolles, to the right of the entrance, stands a replica of the statue of Notre-Dame de Marceille. According to local tradition, it was placed there to point pilgrims on the Way of St James towards Limoux and its famous basilica. This is a traditional explanation, not a confirmed historical interpretation.
Another distinctive feature is the Main de Sainte-Anne beside the parish church in Lignairolles, set into a façade wall beside the path. This enigmatic sculpture is an archaic cross with paw-shaped ends, set on a small trapezoidal base. At its centre is what is probably a sacred depiction of Saint Anne’s left hand. The shape and base can be described precisely; the interpretation of the depicted motif remains a possibility. The two objects therefore also differ in how they can be understood: the Marceille replica is associated with the traditional story of guiding pilgrims, while the Main de Sainte-Anne invites attention to its precise form and a cautious interpretation.
Another point of reference for the town’s history is the year 1265: Guy de Lévis III used a regular town plan when establishing Lignairolles.
When choosing what to explore, you can distinguish between the route options by their focus: a moderately difficult, 7.5 km panoramic trail, the different ways of getting around on the Voie Verte, or the section marked as the Way of St James. The sculptures and historical reference add a distinct cultural focus.
