Palaja brings together the first foothills of the Corbières and buildings whose history spans several centuries. Garrigue, pine and holm oak forests, and rocky slopes shape the landscape; Tour de Cazaban, Saint-Étienne Church and other historic sites add a cultural dimension. When planning your visit, you can consider nature and architectural history as two distinct themes. If you would like to experience both, you can make room for each during your stay without having to follow a set itinerary.

Landscape and outdoor activities

Palaja lies on the first foothills of the Corbières. The landscape includes garrigue vegetation, pine and holm oak forests, and rocky slopes. There are opportunities for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking in the immediate area. You can therefore plan your time outdoors around the activity that interests you. A hiking trail of around seven kilometres offers route options to suit the time available and your fitness level. Regardless of its length, the trail is intended exclusively for pedestrians, horse riders and mountain bikers; motorised vehicles are prohibited. Check the current regulations before using it.

Tower and church: distinct chapters in architectural history

The square Tour de Cazaban has a modified upper section that serves as a dovecote. The tower has been protected as a Monument historique since its listing on 24 April 1953. Different historical periods can also be distinguished at Saint-Étienne Church: the present church stands on the site of an earlier Saint-Étienne, whose Notre-Dame altar was consecrated by Bishop Gimer in 917. The present building, by contrast, was not constructed until the first half of the 14th century, during the episcopate of Pierre de Rochefort.

The year 917 therefore refers to the consecration of the altar in the original church, not to the construction of the present building. Saint-Étienne is a fortified Gothic building with loopholes and has been listed in the supplementary inventory of Monuments historiques since 1961. Taken together, the early record of the altar consecration and the later building history offer a view of the town's history spanning a long period; the architectural features of the present building provide a distinct focus.

Priory, chapel and Les Arcades

The origins of the Prieuré de Saint Foulc date back to the beginning of the 11th century. Visitor facilities were added at the site in 2017: a car park, a rest area, a footpath and an information board. If you plan to visit, you can check the condition of these facilities in advance.

The Oratoire de la Vierge is an old chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. For several years, the association Les Amis du Vieux Palaja has organised a procession there on 15 August. If you would like to take this date into account, check the dates for the relevant year's event. Les Arcades add a former practical function to the historic sites: the former aqueduct supplied water to the castle. Today, many residents of Palaja use the site for walks.
