Romanesque religious buildings, a restored windmill and a range of wine experiences give Montbrun-Des-Corbières a distinct identity for a trip combining culture and wine. The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Colombier and the Église Saint-Roch are part of its architectural heritage; several wineries offer tours, tastings or insights into winemaking. Vineyards and Mediterranean nature also shape the landscape around the village.
Romanesque Buildings and Rural Heritage
The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Colombier was a medieval priory. The Romanesque building dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries; its architecture is characteristic of the Languedoc Romanesque style. The apse is decorated with Lombard bands, and the chapel also has an impressive porch. A decree dated June 26, 1950, designated the chapel as a historic monument. The building thus combines a long history, distinctive architectural details and a specific protected status.
The Église Saint-Roch is a Romanesque church in the heart of Montbrun-Des-Corbières. The restored windmill of Montbrun offers another perspective on the local heritage: it is considered a historic testament to traditional rural ingenuity and a symbol of cultural and architectural heritage. The mill is occasionally open to the public, giving visitors the chance to learn about the history of traditional milling. Since it is only open occasionally, it is best to check in advance whether a visit is possible.
Hiking to the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Colombier
The 56-kilometre, moderately difficult circular hike De l’eau à la pierre starts in Argens-Minervois and leads to Montbrun. Before reaching the village, it follows a small side road to the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Colombier. When planning, take note of the stated total distance and moderate difficulty; the route does not start from Montbrun. Check the signage and trail conditions before setting out.
Wineries: Tours, Tastings and Vineyards
Château de l’Horte offers guided tours where visitors can discover wines bottled directly on site. Free tastings of the winery’s wines are also available. If you would like to do both, note that tours and tastings are separate visitor experiences. Confirm the visiting arrangements before your arrival.
At Château Vieux Moulin, you can taste the winery’s full range of wines; regional products are also available to sample. Another experience takes you into the vineyards, where you can explore the landscapes, soils and grape varieties. The offerings here therefore range from tastings in the cellar to a closer look at the vineyards and their different features.
Château du Roc was built in the early 18th century and has been run from father to son. Visitors can taste and purchase wines produced at the estate. There are also demonstrations of vineyard work, old tools and an Échaudeuse. The visit thus combines the estate’s wines with hands-on insights into winemaking and the equipment used.
L’Avenir Les Celliers de Montbrun also offers guided tours for individual visitors. If you plan to take a tour, confirm the visiting arrangements before your arrival.
