Mazerolles-du-Razès combines medieval architectural history with a walking landscape of hills, vineyards and panoramic views. The Église Notre-Dame and a wayside cross with two different images give the village a cultural focus; the trails offer a numbered circular route profile and views from the Chemin des Amouriès for different kinds of discovery.

Church and wayside cross: architectural history and details

The main construction phase of the Église Notre-Dame dates to the 14th century. The south portal is designed as a pointed arch and has capitals decorated with foliage. A pointed arch tapers to a point at the top; capitals form the upper ends of supports. Two different design features can therefore be distinguished on this portal: the shape of the arch and the botanical ornament.

The heritage listings also refer to specific parts of the church: the bell gable and the portal were listed as historic monuments by decree of 29 November 1948. Another historic detail is the wayside cross (Croix de chemin) in the entrance portal. It dates from the 16th century and was listed as a historic monument by decree of 27 October 1941. One side bears the image of an open hand, while the other shows a Paschal lamb carrying a cross. The architectural history, portal design and two images each provide their own distinctive features.

Mazerolles-du-Razès among the circular villages of the Limouxin

In the Limouxin, Mazerolles-du-Razès is one of eleven circular villages spread across several streets. These villages are characterized by adjoining houses arranged concentrically around a church or a château. In general, the layout of the streets and the arrangement of the buildings are connected in circular villages. This description of the village type adds a broader perspective on circular villages to the view of individual buildings such as the Église Notre-Dame.

Walking between circular routes and panoramic views

The “Paysages et Vignobles en Bas-Razès” circular walk is 17.1 km long and has an elevation gain of 250 m. It starts at the information board on the Grand Rue in Lasserre de Prouille; the route continues to Mazerolles-du-Razès. In the village, it follows Rue de l'église, crosses the D102 and then continues onto Chemin de Rhau. The distance, elevation gain and starting point provide practical guidance for planning the walk. A water point is marked on the route in Mazerolles-du-Razès; check on site whether it is usable.

The Chemin des Amouriès offers a different perspective. From its heights, there are sweeping views of the Lauragais, the Malepère and, in the distance, the Pyrenees. The landscape along the trail is hilly and includes fields, vineyards, woodland and meadows with horses. The two walking options therefore differ in their focus: the distance and elevation gain help guide planning for the circular walk, while the landscape and views define the Chemin des Amouriès. Check the current route before setting out; route details and waymarking can change, and conditions on the Chemin des Amouriès may vary.
