Fleury brings together natural landscapes, short walking routes and heritage with the wines of AOC La Clape. The Étang de Pissevache lies between the Massif de la Clape and the sea; two easy circular walks specify their distances and walking times. There is also a Gallo-Roman villa ruin, a former chapel of the Dukes of Fleury, and a wine route offering encounters with winegrowers and wine tastings. You can therefore shape your stay around the landscape, outdoor activities, history or wine.

Lagoon and Massif de la Clape

The Étang de Pissevache is a natural lagoon with exceptionally rich biodiversity. Its location between the massif and the sea gives the landscape a clear outline. The site also offers a specific focus for nature observation: waders, ducks and other birds can be observed and photographed there at different times of year. Seasonal changes make birdlife a topic in its own right if you are interested in wildlife photography.

The Massif de la Clape overlooks Saint-Pierre-la-Mer and is well suited to walks and nature outings. So, alongside the lagoon, there are also trails and excursions to explore. The two natural areas offer different ways to shape a stay: the natural lagoon with its biodiversity, and the massif as a destination for walks and nature experiences.

Walking routes and outdoor activities

For a walk with a clearly stated duration, the easy Sentier du vieux Perinhan is a manageable option: this historic circular route is two kilometres long, takes one hour and starts in front of Fleury d’Aude town hall. The equally easy Boucle des Cayrols starts there too and covers 4.5 kilometres, with a walking time of two hours and 120 metres of elevation gain. The two routes can be compared by distance and time; both start at the same named location.

For mountain biking, Fleury d’Aude has the “Découverte en VTT du massif de la Clape” trail network: 135 kilometres of marked trails are spread across eight loops. These figures describe a larger trail network, while the two routes mentioned above are specific individual walks. Domaine de L’Oustalet now serves as a welcome and starting point for numerous hikes on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. This adds further ways to experience the area to the marked loops.

Gallo-Roman ruin and historic chapel

The Gallo-Roman villa ruin of Fount de Rome dates from the 2nd century and is classified as a historic monument. It was classified by decree on 30 June 1970. The site thus combines the surviving remains of a villa from the Gallo-Roman period with its later official protection.

The Ancienne chapelle des Pénitents, the former chapel of the Dukes of Fleury, was built between 1735 and 1750 at the same time as the château. It has been listed as a French historic monument since 11 October 1982. Together, the two buildings represent different historical periods: the villa ruin from the 2nd century and the chapel from the 18th century. If you are interested in heritage, this contrast in dates offers a tangible way to explore Fleury’s history.

AOC La Clape wines

Another aspect of a stay here is the AOC La Clape wine route. Visitors can meet winegrowers and taste their wines. Wine thus complements a programme that also includes walks, nature outings and historic buildings, with each offering a distinct experience.
