Boutenac can be explored through three distinct themes: hiking, wine country and architectural history. The routes can be compared by distance, elevation gain and the stated walking time for one of them. Churches, a chapel and a partly ruined fortress offer other historical themes; the wineries bring together scenery, grape varieties and tastings. You can therefore plan your visit around whether you would rather spend time outdoors, learn about architecture or focus on wine.

Hiking and scenery

The Circuit des Combes par la Chapelle is an easy circular hike starting from Boutenac. The route is 7.3 kilometres long and has 190 metres of elevation gain. After passing two vineyards, the trail climbs through an area lined with holm oaks and pines into the pine forest. La Boucle des Terroirs starts at the Château de Boutenac and offers 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside. It is 10.5 kilometres long, rated easy and listed as taking around three hours, with 271 metres of elevation gain. Both routes are easy; the Circuit des Combes is shorter and has less elevation gain, while an approximate walking time is given for La Boucle.

Check the conditions on La Boucle des Terroirs before setting out. The Pinède de Boutenac itself also offers many opportunities for walks and hikes; trail conditions may vary. If you want to choose a specific route, you can use the distance and elevation details as a guide. If you prefer a more open-ended plan, the pine forest is an interesting scenic destination without committing to either of the two named routes.

Wine: scenery, vineyards and tastings

At Domaine de Fontsainte, the vineyard shapes the landscape around the village of Boutenac and offers an exceptional panorama. It lies on the edge of a 500-hectare pine forest, where it is sheltered from cold northeasterly winds. Château de Saint-Louis offers a different perspective: on the hills of Boutenac, the estate has a 120-hectare vineyard and 11 grape varieties. These details provide different ways to explore the wine theme, from the landscape setting to the size of the vineyard.

At Château La Voulte Gasparets, visitors can taste wines in the cellar and talk with the winemaker. Confirm the arrangements for your visit in advance. This makes it different from the landscape and vineyard details offered by the other wineries: here, the focus is on meeting the winemaker and tasting the wines.

Churches, chapel and fortress

The Église Saint-Mamès dates from the 12th century. In 1891, it was expanded to include two side aisles, two altars and eight new stained-glass windows. Its furnishings include a baptismal font and a white marble support pier. The baptismal font originally came from the abacus of a capital, while the support pier came from an altar base. Both items have been listed as protected objects since 1973. The church thus offers several concrete points of interest for considering its architectural development alongside individual historic objects.

The Église Saint-Martin de Gasparets was listed as a Monument historique by decree dated 27 April 1948. Its nave has a barrel vault with a pointed profile; the similarly vaulted choir is at a lower level. The focus of this building is therefore the shape of its vaults and the difference in height between the nave and choir.

The Chapelle Saint-Siméon is associated with a hermit who lived in the Massif de Boutenac above the cultivated land. An annual procession on the first Tuesday in August is also part of the chapel’s tradition. Confirm local arrangements before you arrive. The Château de Boutenac offers a different perspective: the partly ruined medieval fortress was built to defend against attacks. Together, these sites showcase different aspects of the area’s heritage, from religious buildings and their furnishings to a fortress with a defensive purpose.
