Alzonne can be explored through three distinct themes: the Canal du Midi, the river landscape of the Vallée du Lampy Natura 2000 site, and historic structures such as the church and the Aqueduct of the Rébenty. This gives visitors more than one perspective when choosing where to stay. You can include water engineering and local history in your travel plans, as well as the nature around the Lampy and Vernassonne.

The Canal du Midi and the river landscape

The Canal du Midi crosses the municipality of Alzonne for a length of 2 km. This route is a distinctive geographical feature of the area. A remarkable structure on the border between Alzonne and Bram illustrates the canal’s engineering history: the Aqueduct of the Rébenty enables it to cross the Rébenty stream. Its four arches, length of 25 m, and total height of 6 m give the structure clear, concrete dimensions.

The river landscape is also part of the character of the municipality. Alzonne is one of eight municipalities in the “Vallée du Lampy” Natura 2000 site, a Special Area of Conservation that encompasses the catchment areas of the Lampy and Vernassonne. Fish species of Community interest found there include the Mediterranean barbel, bitterling, toxostome, and brook lamprey. The presence of the European otter has also been confirmed along the Vernassonne. Those interested in biodiversity will find a nature theme here that differs from the engineering structures on the Canal du Midi.

Lanes, church, and historic structures

The older northern part of Alzonne lies on a hill bordered by the Lampy and the Vernassonne. Historic remains can be discovered while walking through the lanes. This gives a walk through the village its own historical context, without requiring any single structure to be the main focus.

The church of Alzonne has a history that is also reflected in its name: older documents refer to it as “Notre-Dame du Mont-Soleil”; today it is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Its bell tower contains four bells. Two of them are listed in the Monuments historiques register. The structure thus brings together a historical name, its present-day dedication, and a specifically identified element of heritage.

The Aqueduct of the Rébenty adds a perspective on the construction history of the Canal du Midi. It can be seen on the border between Alzonne and Bram and serves a specific purpose: it allows the canal to cross the Rébenty. With four arches over a length of 25 m and a total height of 6 m, the structure can also be described in terms of its dimensions. Together with the canal, which crosses the municipality for 2 km, it illustrates the connection between the waterway and engineering structures.

Walking route and Fête Locale

If you would like to combine a visit to Alzonne with a walk, the “L’abbaye de Villelongue” walking route passes through the municipality. Separately, historic remains can be discovered on a walk through the lanes: the route through Alzonne and the village streetscape offer two different starting points for planning your visit.

The Fête Locale d’Alzonne also brings together a range of activities. The program includes boules or pétanque, fishing, football, dancing, and a ball. Cassoulet is also served in the village streets during the festival. The activities may vary; if you are planning your trip around the festival, check the current event dates.
